How many of you read to your children?

I have read to my boys every night before bed, since I found out I was pregnant. They love it! Each night I will read each boy 2 books, they pick. Then my son Isaac will read on his own until he falls asleep. Once he's gone to sleep I will have to go in there, pull a book off his face and clean another half dozen or so out of the bed so he can sleep comfortably. I have 13 nieces and nephews and none of there parents read to them, EVER! I don't understand it. Reading encourages them to use their imaginatons. Why would most of today's parents rather instill in their children a love of television, computer & video games rather than a love of books?

I read to my children every night. My children love it. I read them each 4-5 books a day. I believe reading is good and encourages them to want to read. My oldest daughter is only 4 and she will try to "read" she can read some words but nothing major.

That is great! Childrens books are short, even the busiest parent should time to sit and read one book with their child.

That's wonderful. I hope my boys will still like me to read to them at that age or if they want they can read to me. I still love being read to. Sometimes when I'm not feeling well and don't really have any energy, my husband will read the paper to me.

We go to the library every two or three weeks and pick up about seven books (new books help me to keep concentration, my four-year old would gladly listen to the same books every night!) She is at the point now where she wants to try and read herself, I love to help her learn to read. We get books in both English and Welsh as she is schooled in Welsh, but speaks English at home. She easily assimilates both languages as only a child can... We have loads and loads of books, but sometimes when I am really tired I will just make stories up for her (mostly based on the three little pigs which often end up in a Goldilocks or other unrelated fairy story!!) and sometimes we will take in in turns to tell paragraphs of a story which really helps to develop the imagination. To be fair she loves telly too, but if you ask her if she wants a story, she will turn the telly off straight away...

No matter what house a child is brought up in, they will love the tv, that's why it's our jobs as parents to turn it off.

I am one of those parents who dont read to their children. My children are more interested watching television, surfing the internet and of course video games. Sometimes, I do tell them story, not from a book but my own childhood story. They love to ask questions like how many friends I have, how well I was at school or do I have any special friends etc. In return they will tell me their days at school or what they want to be when they grow up. It not the same like reading a book to them but it is quite similar.

Your right it's not the same as reading to your children, but it is great that you're communicating with them.

I may miss a night or two when she is tired but I try to read to my daughter often. When she was a little younger she wouldnt really pay attention but she is at the age now she is constantly bringing me books. I am a firm believer in education starts at an early age so if I can teach her the value of books now then you bet I am going to do so. I wish I knew somewhere I could get some more books for a good price though. I cannot afford to buy them new. I am waiting for the library to do its annual sale. I have found a few at local garage sales though and I jump right on those.

I am also a bargain hunter when it somes to books. I buy them often so I can't afford to pay full price. I belong to the childrens book of the month club. They have great bargain books. I also go to Borders and Barns & Nobles. If you go straight to the bargain rack you are bound to find something. My family and I where in Barns & Nobles last weekend and I spent $28 for 7 books. I spent 2 hours just trying to pick which ones to buy because they had so many bargain books to choose from.

We read to our kids every night too. My youngest daughter doesn't really sit still yet and listen, but she's only 3. She's usually in the room though when I am reading to her sister. My 5 year old loves to be read to. She is in preschool now and they are starting to learn a few words. I have a feeling when she learns to read she'll read everything she can get her hands on. I think you are right, more parents should read to their kids.

I read to my girls every night even thoughthe younger one is only 13 months she still acts like she is listening, and I rather not have my children love tv or games more than books,I prefer they play outside and use the imagination, then play a silly video game anyday.Video games are not allowed in my house and never will be,I have seen my nephews get addicted to them and they never go outside and play because of them.My sister never read to her kids either, but I guess to each person has there own way of parenting their kids and who is anyone to judge them as it is a free country.

My sons are 23 and 26 so I don't anymore. I sure did when they were younger, though. They are three years apart and when the older was learning to read, we would all cuddle in the bed and he would read to his younger brother and I was there to help. Great family memories, and I believe helped them off to a good start academically.

Yes, I have read to all of my daughters and I read to my grandsons when I get the chance. I was told by a teacher that reading to your children at a young age has proven to not only make them have the desire to read but also generally makes them a better student. I believe this, all of my daughters were good students and I have one grandson in the TAG program, one is an honor student, and another is in the top 90% of his class! I am very proud of them!
