Here's an interesting tidbit. The first account I read about a special needs child being removed from the classroom and homeschooled was back when I was still in grade school, myself, and it happened many years before that. I would read a story containing more information about this same person (a little boy) when I was older, and it had been determined by then that he was hearing-impaired and, likely, dyslexic. For whatever reason he learned differently. He and his family were thrilled to find out that a school had opened close to where they lived, so he was sent there. Unfortunately, he had a meanspirited teacher who was a bully. He seemed to take a sick pleasure in smacking this boy on his head and encouraging the other students to make fun of him. If I remember the story correctly, the little boy didn't complain too much at first, but his mother noticed that he had gone from being excited about going to school to dreading it almost to the point of getting sick, and she wondered why. When she found out what that nasty man was doing to her little boy, she pulled him out of school and taught him herself. In order to read what Paul Harvey refers to as "The Rest Of The Story," go here: http://tinyurl.com/yxv4nl It might not be the entire rest of the story, but it shows that the boy's mother made the right decision.

No not yet, but I am pulling my son from public school and they are sending to my home for home instruction. He is in Middle school and things are just not at his level and the teacher is not trying to make it so.

There are plenty of pros/cons in homeschooling a child with special needs. I would mostly it would depend on what kind of support system you have. I have had my child "homebound" from school where the school sent a teacher to us. That was a very long year, I couldn't work as full time daycare was not available for children with special needs..and it became quite isolating. I prefer she be in school for several reasons. More services.., socialization, learn coping skills to be out on the world and since I work full time...I don't have the time to home school her. And I dare to say some days the patience that it requires. At home we work on her personal hygiene, self care and other skills she doesn't get at school. It's a 24 hour a day job for some parents..
