When you cook using a rice cooker, do you use it only to cook rice or do you cook rice with vegetables and sauce in it?
*
I cook entire meals in my rice cooker. I have put the rice (naturally), thinly sliced carrots, thin sliced celery, peas, canned string beans, olives, and often other ingredients into the pot. Many times I toss precooked dried beans and meat in. The meals come out quite good.
*
There is a steamer that fits above the rice pot. I use it to parboil vegetables such as potatoes or carrots for freezing in cold storage.

My client has a small microwave rice cooker. I've put things in the container to cook with the rice or for the rice to cook with - but she really doesn't need to be eating rice since she's diabetic.
I also use it to put spagetti (low carb noodles) so she can reheat it in a container that has a locking lid and won't spill easily.

Unfortionately, with things getting so expensive, vegetables and meat are getting priced out of range of many people.

The steam basket can be used for cooking as well, all you need to do is put water in the rice portion, no rice. That's how I parboil veggies without loosing the nutrients.
*
What about brown rice? That is rice that has the germ and the other stuff on it still. Is that out of line for diabetics?

Hmm, I've never had a problem with brown rice in my rice cooker, but I don't have a microwave rice cooker. I've one of those electric jobs you plug in and put on the counter. It comes with a measuring cup for the rice and the pot has a measure for the water. I'm also in the mountains. That could be the issue because cooking in the mountains is different than cooking in lower elevations.

If you've ran into yucky in restaurants, then I can't help you. It does taste a little different, maybe we've different tastebuds. It has a slightly nutty flavor. That's from the germ.

Hallo CraftyCorner
my mom recipe its great with rice cooker. She made a yellow rice in a rice cooker. Yellow rice it's a traditional recipe from jawa island. But my mom can make it using a rice cooker and it's more delicious that when we cook it traditional ways.

I must steam, because when I buy I do so in bulk. That way I get the savings I need for my tiny budget. I can parcel out my 5 pounds of carrots and they won't rot over a two month period sitting in the freezer.

I dont have a rice cooker, but after reading the posts I will now go out and get one. I always cooked my rice on the stove. Sounds like a rice cooker is easy to use.

Yea, the stove top can be an iffy business as you can scorch your pot pretty easily if you don't watch it.

I had never thought to cook entire
meals in a rice cooker, before.
But it does make sense!
Currently, I use the microwave
to do most of my cooking and it's a
similar experience.

My three suspects are the rice cooker, the microwave, and the crock pot. The stove top is utterly neglected, and the oven is strictly for roasting turkeys. That last is enormous and it cooks the house plus occupants as well as the bird!

Hi, here is one recipe for you try. It saves times.
Tuna rice in rice cooker.
1)Wash rice (desired amount)
2)Put rice into rice cooker, mix vege (optional),button mushroom(optional)
3) Add water to the correct level in rice cooker.
4)Cook it.
5) After the lever jumps up, pour a can of oil tuna chunks and cut cube hams into rice and stir it.
6) Close the lid of the rice cooker and let it seamer for about 5 to 10 minutes.
That's all....very easy.

Thanks so much for starting this topic you know. My husband and I went for a conference last month and food was not provided. To save money we brought our rice cooker down. Manage to cook meals out of rice cooker. So now I am looking for some more rice cooker recipes because we are going for this training at least two more times before the year ends. Thanks its great. we can share.
