Is Depression Contagious?

Lately one of my best friends has been down in the dumps. He's been having nervous breakdowns and is really depressed. I like hanging out with him and helping him out, yet his consistent negativity and depressing nature seems to bother me. It's making me more depressed. Is depression contagious? How do you manage contagious depression?
