Hello all! I begin comparing prices about one year prior to purchasing a new vehicle. I know I will buy one sometime within this year or early 2009. My last vehicle is a Hyundai, mostly due to the warranty and good reports regarding repairs, etc. I would truly like to buy American this time and wonder if any of you have the same concerns and what conclusions you have come to. How American are American cars these days anyway? Assembled here, parts made in other parts of the world? I have time to make this decision my little car has 106,000 and going strong. I just knocked on wood :)

If I search for new car it would be hybrid car. Toyota Prius or new mini Mercedes-Benz. I would buy American car if they make good hybrid. Speaking from my heart, I try to buy Made in USA only, but not American cars.

My current vehicle is a Hyundai, prior to that was an Isuzu, prior to that a Nissan, prior to that a Datsun, so I hear you on the American car thing. I was hoping they got their stuff together enough to keep up with the asian manufacturers. I thought about the Mercedes, in fact, that is what is up on my vision board, but cost is a factor. I am still considering one though, it is a thought process that takes me about one year to research and make a final decision. The Prius is too small for me and my job, dogs, kids, etc. It is the same size I have now. Maybe one of the hybrid mini suv's? Have a great day!

SO much of "foreign" cars are assembled in America - Honda and Toyota especially. Yet parts of American cars, sucha s Ford and Chevy have parts that are assembled in other countries and then shipped her for further assembly. Just check the car of your choice and see. i do my best to buy american made and if I can't, I'll at least buy whats gives the most jobs here in America. It might be assembling a foreign car part, but at least some American is getting a paycheck from it.

I try to always buy American as well, when available. I'll do research for probably a year before making the final decision, but that is a major consideration. Thanks for responding! Have a good day.

Good timing! Check the April issue of Consumer Reports. That's their annual cars issue. Also, you can look on the Car Talk website, www.cartalk.com at their recommendations. As for where the parts for American cars are made, some are made in China or Japan, some in the U.S. I guess the important part is where the company's money is invested, and where the work force is (to support American jobs). Our Nissans have been built in the U.S. (very reliable, as you already know). Our Ford F150 has well over 100,000 miles on it and is going strong. We'd certainly buy another Ford truck if the need arises. I'm married to a car guy and totally trust his judgment. Our next car, almost for sure, will be another Nissan, probably an Altima (we have two in our family now and have retired a Sentra). Quality, price, reliability - great value.

Yep, remember my red Sentra? It lasted for at least 200,000 last time I checked. I sold it to a friend of mine's son for his college car. I think I may go with the Santa Fe, however, that is not set in stone yet :) I will go to cartalk website, that's a good idea as well as the consumer reports April issue, yes, timely!
