I love to have a bagel with cream cheese or butter for breakfast...are bagels good for our health or not?

I love bagels although I don't really know if they are bad for you or not. I'll be interested in reading the other comments to see. I love them hot with butter on them or melted cheese. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I like bagels with cream cheese or butter if there's no cream cheese. I also know they aren't good for me. They are denser in calories than plain toast and the cream cheese...well what can we say about that? I got the whole wheat variety last time with a nice amount of fiber and felt better about that, until I put the butter on. I won't give them up, but eat them less often.

Bagels themselves are not bad for you, but the butter and the cream cheese are. I try to only use a little butter or 1/3 less fat cream cheese. I can eat blueberry bagels from the bakery at the grocery store without anything on them.

The bagel is good for you because it is lower in fat than many bread products but the cream cheese and the butter are bad for you because of their high levels of cholesterol. I like to buy bagels which contain seeds and wholegrains as they are more healthy and I don't need to add butter or spread.

There are worse things out there than bagels. Try buying whole grain bagels, then topping them with a bit of all natural peanut butter rather than cream cheese or butter. Peanut butter still has fat, but it's the good kind.
