I had a friend come to visit from the UK. We tried to give her a true south african experience. Most of her meals were of South african origin. We offered her what we call Biltong (beef) and she called it Jerky! She spat it out and said they feed that stuff to their dogs back home. We then offered her a small piece of dry wors (dry sausage) and she spat that out too. We offered her a piece of game biltong and she smelt it and said no thanks lol. I really dont blame her because I am not a meat eater myself, and see biltong etc as rotten meat! Do you eat biltong or jerky?

I call it beef jerky. I really like it and so do my kids. We eat it all the time. I have never made it though. I buy it when I go to the store. It is not rotten, it is dried.

You should look into finding jerky that isn't beef. I've had salmon jerky before and real homemade jerky (not the store bought stuff) and it is absolutely amazing. Most times though for anything that isn't beef you have to make your own or find someone who does. A farmer's market might be a good place to look for it as well. And your kids will love the variety in flavors.

I eat jerky from time to time, trying to buy a smoker so I can get into making my own. A friend gave me a recipe years ago that I need to dig up, but it involved curing the meat in some apple juice and other spices..definitely sounded interesting.
