This is a photo of my front deck. As you can tell it is VERY faded from the exposure to the sun. It is made with the standard outdoor woods. I waterproofed it after it was built 2 years ago. It is need of waterproofing once again. I am also tired of looking at the sun faded appearance of the deck as well. there is no color left to it. I have a sprayer to use to make the chore easier. here's my questions for this discussion... Is their a stain and waterproofing product available in the marketplace? Or do I have to buy both waterproofing and stain to take care of this? What would you feel is the best stain to use? Not brand name but color type such as cedar, clear, etc. I would greatly appreciate some serious feedback on this. Especially on the tone/color of the stain. Thanks in advance all. YIKES! I think someone must have used a bit too much stain though and did not treated it prior to staining it though. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM DADDY!!~

I am positive there is a stain & waterproof product available, without having to buy both. There is no pint in me recommending one as whatever you have available locally could be different. As for colour, we always go for a completely natural, wood type look, but really personal preference is up to you. Our back pergola needs doing too & Dave will use a natural wood like colour. I wrote ca comment with your photo.

The stuff is costly. Luckily my deck isn't really big. It is about 6 foot by 4 foot only. So a galon or two will do the job covering the deck and steps and the rails. Thanks. I really want it a shade darker with the wood grain showing. I am going to ask some experts soon for some ideas etc. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I am going to guess that there is something out there for what you are asking for.. I know my landlord also has a nice deck he just did too and it needs to be stained also.. Well the place needs to be moved cause it's going down hill fast.. Go figure he just went ahead and build something without even thinking.. But yeah there has to be something out there maybe trying going to a hardware store at least I know here that's where we need to go and get our paints and stuff that we need....

I do believe there is a waterproofing product that also has a stain in it at Menards but I could be wrong. If noone here can help you, Grandpa Bob, then try talking to the nice folks at Menards, Lowes, or Home Depot.

I am going to hit all these stores this weekend or next asking questions and pricing them as well. I also need to paint the whole house inside as well. Going to be costly it seems. Thanks bunches. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

nice deck there, bob. I can see that it really has faded. It seems that you pay enough for the waterproofing that it should be available in tints. Maybe the outdoor center or hardware store can advice as far as that goes. here is the website url for Thompson's Water Sealer http://www.thompsonswaterseal.com/products/

Thank you very much. That's the brand I used 2 years ago as a water sealant. I am going to Home Depot soon to ask questions. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Well it seems they have the stain/water sealant combo. It looks like all the stains are also a water sealant etc. Thanks again. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

The last year we were in the house, we used a tinted waterproofing on the deck. We had one that was reddish and I wouldn't recommend that one. I seem to remember we had a lot of choices. I think it depends on if you want the wood grain to show or not - if you do, clear is the choice. Also, when we had a darker brown on the deck originally, every spot of dirt showed. I wouldn't go dark either. I'd use a lighter one next time but would watch the color carefully. We used a nice light golden brown before the darker one and it ended up looking like baby poo - the neighbors were nice enough to point this out early on. I noticed you have shutters on the front and you are wanting something that wouldn't clash with those? A cedar would contrast nicely with those, or you could go with the same color if available. The home improvement store had a really good selection too. They also recommend washing down the deck really good too - oh we had a time with the power washing stuff! I'm always happy to make suggestions, especially when I'm not doing the work

We built our deck 2 years ago as well- We didn’t stain it- Bought pressure treated wood and I liked the color. We did use Thompson’s water sealer. Brushed it on. We put that on each year so far. This year we will power wash it and then seal it again--- still has a great color though : ) I like the darker wood stain or a dark cedar. Just my opinion. I can see how a sprayer would save lots of time! Smart!
