Stupid Animal Law

Recently, Bob Barker and the collective animal activists managed to get a law passed that not only won't help the animals but will likely cause more deaths. They've passed a law in Los Angeles requiring everyone to spay/neuter their animals by the age of four months. The law is worthless and will only lead to more animals being dumped on the street. I've been an animal lover since I was a little girl. I used to bring home strays of all kinds and I would love nothing more than to save each animal out there but this is not the way to do it. Animal activists need to get a reality check and they need to deal with animal owners from a place of compassion and understanding instead of trying to force people to do something they may not be able to afford to do. I know from experience that threats and force don't accomplish anything. I live in a neighborhood full of illegal immigrants and their first priority is their family and why would they fear an animal law when our government doesn't even enforce our immigration laws? The only thing this law they've passed will accomplish is causing these people who are irresponsible in the first place to dump the animals on the street or hand them over to Animal Services for destruction if they get caught. These people have risked their lives to come to this country to live illegally so why would they risk their lives or what they have now for an animal? They don't think in those terms. Even people who aren't here illegally will not be deterred by this law. The only way they could ever really enforce it is to go door to door with a search warrant, which is absurd. It would cost too much and that would be a violation of people's constitutional rights. It's just not realistic. A good example are the equal rights laws. They were passed many years ago but there is still a lot of prejudice in this country and most women still make less money than men in the same job. If the government hasn't been able to enforce those laws that involve human beings, why would anyone think they'd enforce a law about animals that many people in this country treat with such carelessness? The only way to save the animals is to reach the people who own them. And the only way to reach them is with compassion and understanding and empathy. Not with force or fear. Hopefully, one day the people who really love animals will understand this and then begin to really save the animals. Unfortunately, most animal activists only see things from their perspective and as long as they do, animals will continue to die needlessly.

If Bob Barker did this (saying it like that because I haven't read anything about it yet, but I will), then he should know better. You can't force everyone to do something just because you think it's a good idea. Firstly, if people are going to be forced to have their animals fixed, then a plan has to be in place first to actually allow everyone to be able to spay or neuter their pets. It can't jsut be "Do it, or else!" It has to be "Do it, and here's help to get it done." I'd be willing to bet that there are a lot of people who can't afford to get their pets fixed, or who don't have transportation to a vets office to get it done. What are they supposed to do? Secondly, forcing people to do something only makes them rebel. This is going to cause a lot of pets to be abandoned by their owners-not only because they might not be able to follow this law, but also as a way to "stick it" to the law makers who passed it. It's sad, but a lot of people do a lot of things out of spite, and leaving their cats and dogs in the street is going to be one of those things. This is either another example of people in charge trying to make the loudest mouths happy, or an example of complete stupidity. Either way, animals are going to be the ones that end up paying for it. A great example Mr. Barker is for protecting animals when he can't even think about these things before backing something as stupid as this. And, as long as he's been on this planet-again, he should know better.

I found this, but I'm not sure how much help it will be - but, I figure that if they themselves can't help, maybe they can point you in the right direction. This is for the "Furry Friends Rescue - Foster Home Network" in Northern California. They have pet foster homes that take animals in until someone can adopt them. Give them a call or email, and see what they say or can do for you. http://www.furryfriendsrescue.org/fhn.html

Erm...try to forget that other place. I read further on the site, and it seems that they supported that law. So, I searched and found "Heaven On Earth - Society For Animals" instead. It's a no kill shelter in Van Nuys; and, at this time, they are only working with cats and kittens. Again, if they can't help, maybe they would be able to lead you to someone who can. Here's the link: http://www.heavenlypets.org/

That is really sad. I don't think that pet owners should be required to fix their pets. If they are going to do that they should make the procedure free or have some provision for low income people to be able to follow this law.
