http://news.aol.com/health/story/ar/_a/villagers-worship-baby-born-with-2-faces/20080408100909990001 Today there was breaking news about a newborn in India with 2 faces. The above link tells the entire story about how the villagers are adoring and worshiping her. Her parents feel truly blessed by this precious spirit entrusted to their care. After you read the article, please read some of the comments. What is your feeling on this issue? Should this child be given medical attention? Should surgery be considered? Are the villagers correct in their beliefs? Do you feel that the parents are allowing this publicity for personal gain?

Oh my. That was strange to see. I read through the article. I'm just glad the baby is not having any problems. I can see why they might turn down the medical care since she seems to be doing fine. She's not having any health issues. If she later did I hope the care will still be provided. I don't know what I'd do in that situation. I think if it was here in the states the child would be treated far differently then she is over there. She's a symbol of the gods to the villagers were here she would more then likely be considered a freak. I think if I was the mother i would want her to grow up as normal as possible but I'm not in that situation nor do I know all the risks involved in the surgery. Right now the baby is healthy perhaps it is something that should be considered further down the line.

You're quite welcome. I agree I can form an opinion but not sure what good it would do. The parents have to figure out for themselves and their society is so vastly different from ours I wouldn't even attempt to suggest something for them. They more then anyone know what is best in this situation. Since the baby appears to be healthy in all other respects my thought is we shouldn't interfere and let the parents handle it.

Emeraldisle, My feelings are running very similar to yours right now. I have not really formed an opinion that can hold water at the moment; and even if I had, it would only be my opinion and what is that worth to anyone else? LOL! Thank you so much for your response. ~Donna

Wow, that is really something. If the little girl is in no danger, they should leave her alone (as for having surgery). I don't know what they could do. If the little girl is going to be adored and treated good that is super. Thats better then having her being made fun of. Her parents say she is fine. Some of the comments that were made and posted after the article are rude and crude. Shame on some of the people. Some people were making fun of the little girl. Any one of us could have a handicap or disabled child, how would they feel if that happened to them. I do hope the little girl is able to grow up and be as normal as she can. I also hope that she doesn't have any big health issues from this. BTW, its nice seeing you, you have been missed.

Thats such a sweet thing for the little one to say. My 3 yr. old grandson just saw the picture, he said she is pretty. She has two faces and he showed me how one was on each side. He has a new sister and is into baby sissies right now. I do hope she will be ok and not have a bunch of problems. As for you, I hope you get to feeling better soon too. Just think Spring has sprung, woohoo... That should brighten up your day some.

Goddess Bless, you old hag! My depression has been so severe that I didn't want to be here (MyLot), or really anywhere else, for that matter. I am slowly coming out of it and trying to get back in touch with my only true friends - the ones that I have here. One of the comments that I read really tugged at my heart strings. A mother wrote that her very young daughter (under 6 I think) saw the picture and said how pretty the baby was. She then added that she only wished the baby had one more face so no matter which way she turned people would be able to see her. Imagine, the purity of that answer. I really have not formed an opinion of this question yet; but I am most truly pleased that the place she is from is welcoming her instead of shunning her.

I was really hoping that you would respond to this dear subha. Exactly how newsworthy is this event there? I love the way that the parents are looking at their baby. You can see the adoration in their faces. You cannot tell that they are poverty stricken, you can just tell that they are blessed. Thank you for your response. ~Donna

Wow...that is so hard. I can't believe some of those comments were so mean! I found that to be very disturbing, and then the religious argument gets brought in... I do think she should have some medical attention. At least just to be sure that everything is working properly. I don't know about surgery...I don't know enough about the condition to have an informed thought. If this was in the US and surgery would guarantee she could live a healthy life then I'd say absolutely yes she should have surgery. But her condition gives her special status there so that changes things and she may be better off being a 'celebrity' than a normal child. Also I don't know how effective surgery really would be for her. If surgery itself could kill her or if it's known that she will not live long even with surgery, then I think it's better to leave her alone and let her parents adore her for as long as they have her. "Are the villagers correct in their beliefs?" I know what you meant, but that is a very loaded question. The villages are correct in their beliefs because they are just that, their beliefs. The rest of the world can disagree but it doesn't matter. We are all entitled to have or not have the religion we choose. There might be a right and a wrong or there may not be. I personally don't agree with them but I'm sure they disagree with my beliefs so it's alright.

I agree with you completely. The only thing is I wish they would consent to medical exams, non invasive of course. Just so the case could be studied and more learned about it.... But not if the parents don't want it. An acquaintance of mine suggested the child be taken away....I think that is totally absurd. Blessed Be, Mari

incredible. do both faces function? I could not find where the article mentions this or not. I am not a plastic surgeon so have no idea what could possibly be done medically. as far as the worshipping... there are so many beliefs around this world, and perhaps the idea of reincarnation and such is not so foreign to those in that village.

Yes, both of her eyes see, both of her tiny noses smell, and she nurses with her little mouths. The only thing she does not have duplicates of are her ears. You are right about the beliefs in other cultures. ~Donna

I feel so bad for that baby. I bet she is suffering. I had read the original article that was posted last week or the week before. I can not believe the parents are turning down free medical attention for the child.

Thank you for your response. According to the article the child is in no pain and appears to be thriving. Perhaps if she gets ill, the parents will seek medical attention.

While they, the parents, and the villagers think that this is a blessing and an incarnation of a Hindu goddess I can't help thinking how backward this thinking is. This is a serious birth defect nothing more. I wholeheartedly agree that if it's possible that the baby get surgery as sooner or later that child is going to have serious medical problems and complications. I do think the parents are showing off their child for publicity and personal gain--there have been babies born with other serious birth defects similar to this, but none consider it as an incarnation of a god or goddess

I feel pity for the parents and also the baby. It is their firstborn. What would their baby future like? Of course the baby should be given a chance for medical attention and see what doctors can do about the baby deformity. If surgery performed, what is the survival rate for baby Lali? Not even doctors can give that guarantee. The final say will be the parents. If they want to leave it be, how can anyone possibly change their mind? Respect their decision. We leave the villagers with their belief, whether it is correct or not, is not for anyone to judge. And lastly, I don't think this publicity is for personal gain. They didn't ask for it. But villagers, the media and the medical science, have indirectly contributed to the publicity.

Wow...that's interesting. I've never seen anything like that on a human before. By only looking at the picture, I'm not even sure surgery would be a possibility. I say they should just love the child as much as they can for as long as they can. Unfortunately, there is the possibility that the child may not live long. But you never know...she could be a miracle baby.

My mother heard about this on the spanish news and she told me about it but I wasn't paying much attention. At first I though she said that there was a child born with two heads, which is nothing new. But then I see this and now I understand what she was talking about. That is really weird. I think that the parents should at least check her out, even though she's behaving normal they have no idea if her body is reacting different or something. I don't know whether they are allowing it for personal gain. I keep thinking about how it will be like when she grows up. Will both of her mouth talk? I mean it's kind of weird. But I wish this baby all the best and may god bless her.

I hope that the parents are simply loving her. And I hope also that you looked through all 4 of the pictures. There is one of her family holding her and they appear to be very caring in it. It says she eats with both mouths. It is, indeed very rare; but stranger things have happened. Thank you for your comment.

I read in one article about it that she has two skulls fused together so surgery is impossible. I guess they could cut off part of her face and skin graph over her mouth and eyes, but the her face will not be centered on her body and you cannot move eyes or mouth. As far as being a worshipped, yea it's weird how they worship birth defects. As soon as the next child comes along with a birth defect they will forget about her and worship them.

Wow, that's pretty strange. Her parents seem very grateful and loving, though, which makes me glad. I can't say I'd do any different. I think people should love the children they get even if they aren't ideal. It breaks my heart when parents treat deformed/"imperfect" children like something to be really ashamed of. To be honest I think even if they are publicizing her for personal gain, that's still better than pretending she doesn't exist. I've read about a case where a man had the same deformity and was able to live normally (aside from the social stigma of having an extra face - he was from a different culture that didn't see it so positively). I don't know if surgery would be possible in her case, but even if it's not I think she should be given medical attention to make sure she's all right and able to thrive. I don't agree with her extra face being a blessing exactly, but I think it's good that the reaction to her is largely positive, because it's not fair to shun her for something she can't help.

Hmm, It seems like maybe this was to be an identical twin or perhaps a siamese twin that only split to make the two faces, or whatever it is that this child has. It is amazing, it would be interesting to find out how the genes worked that would have caused this phenomenon, she seems really cute.....it would be interesting to see what becomes of her. I have heard of siamese twins where just a second head forms but no other body parts are created, and have seen some babies having that head taken off the baby that could survive and note that baby HEAD to be like a parasite, it is freaky.....and sad....My heart goes out to those poor children.....It is amazing that when there is that kind of flaw and god will allow the child to still grow inside and be born. Just interesting and rare....

I love how they say she's a perfectly normal child. Huh? What kind of life is this poor child going to have. I guess it's their decision, but, I would want to get surgery for my child.

I definitely think that this child should be given a thorough medical checkup. Just because she is acting "fine" does not mean that there is nothing wrong with her. I don't think surgery should be considered unless there is a medical reason for it. Her parents and fellow villagers have accepted her as she is, so a surgery simply for cosmetic reasons might end up doing more harm than good. I also don't believe that her parents are using her for personal gain. I think that since the villagers believe that she is a reincarnation of one of their goddesses, she would get attention no matter how much her parents tried to shield her from it.

That poor baby one face looks all pushed out of shape and i wonder if this was supposed to have been twins and somethintg happened to mess up the process as it almost seems like two head in one. I think that they should let the doctors look into the child's internal organs as there maybe big problems there. yes I think surgery will probably be needed as this is strictly abnormal and should be corrected if possible. Why would they worship a misshapen baby?
• United States

Rare case definitely. What is even more rare is how the villages come to worship the baby as a reincarnation of a Hindu deity. I wish not to offend any sensibility, but I think the primary concern of that baby is to seek medical help since I believe there are collateral complications to her case. The baby has to be attended to, and not to be worshipped. But I guess, that's how we need to respect Hindu religion as it is. I seriously think surgery must be contemplated for the eventual welfare of the child. But I am not sure if that is possible considering that the child is adored as though a deity in her village. I doubt if any move to remove their incarnated divine figure by having the baby undergo necessary surgery won't spark vicious protests from the villagers. At this point, I think it is only with the help of the government that the baby shall be helped. I am not sure if it is with justice that we think their parents are capitalizing on the people's faith to propel their financial status. But it looks pretty much like it. While being poor does not translate to an take-advantage attitude, what we have here in India may come close to it. It's unfortunate because they seem, by repeatedly saying "the baby is fine", to be all hell bent in letting the status quo because of the tempting benefits the baby brings.

Whatever the baby looks, she has the rights to go with a normal life, but if she don't get surgent as soon as possible, the hurt to her will be more and more deep. Her parents is stupid, the baby shouldn't be a tool to gain fame and money, I want to say: Stop, save the baby, for her future!!!
