I'm not talking about those nonsense posts: "I slept with my aunt!" or anything like that. I mean those posts that make you stop and take notice and make you think. I'm thinking it's a tie between the abortion issue and perhaps religion. What do you think?

I only give religion credit when its being bombarded in the abortion topic. Religion by itself has less controversy, even when a few other members are vehemently trying to disprove it. Its even less attention grabbing when people simply question religion or religious aspects. My answer would have to be abortion. It always comes up and its always brutal. Politics doesn't even get as bad as this. At least politics makes you think a bit more or maybe you'll realize something. Religion can vary as many people are set in stone with their beliefs.

The ones that make me think are science discussions and the thinker discussions. Tied for second are the religious and political discussions. But its the abortion discussions that are just controversial, completely.

I think as a whole that the religion discussions have been rather subdued--none of the extremists make it on here (I hope! But I agree about the abortion issue...it's a topic that there is no gray area--it tends to be all black and white for everyone involved. Thanks for responding!

Neither am I, nor reading someone else's meanings. It's very hard to communicate through typing--you never quite know how to take someone's comment, even with emoticons. I still can't get over how much this one particular issue has galvanized so many people on either side of the issue.

I think those two topics are the strongest you may find people having views on. The idea of religion or spiritual values however seems to be something that has been controversial since the beginnings of history. Hot topic that is debated argued, etc, and that over time those differing views even lead to wars, and still do. So I guess overall I would have to say that here or in other places the topic one be one of spiritual and religous values.

I think the most controversial is abortion and politics. Those usually bring forth STRONG emotions and unusually heated discussions

I just wanted to see if others felt the same way I did...sometimes you want to voice your own opinion, but when you see total strangers ripping someone else apart, it makes you stop and think. I often wonder how long the debate will go on...

I agree. Both of those topics are very controversial. Stuff about parenting can also turn into an arguement or debate pretty quickly aswell. So many people each have their own way of thinking. I think the reason for all the fighting and controversy over it is because instead of respecting people's views (even if they are ridiculous), we become defensive almost imediately because someone does not agree with us. We feel the urge to defend our opinion without even really thinking what point the other person is trying to make. Well, of course not everyone is like this, but I have found that alot of people are. But I suppose it's what makes the world go round.

I forgot about parenting and believe me, it's easy for someone to point fingers when they don't know the entire situation (I've posted, asking for advice and was instead attacked!) It's amazing that the quietest people you know often have the strongest opinions! You gotta watch for them!
