San Franciso, Open Your Golden Gates...

So this summer I might be able to spend a week in San Francisco, CA with some friends. I've never been, and I'm not sure if the people doing most of the planning have an itinerary set specifically day by day, or if we'll just try to find things while we're there. So, does anyone who's been there/who lives there/lives nearby there have any suggestions of things we should try to see or do while we're there? Even if you just want to suggest big obvious landmarks that's fine, I'm sure there are some of those I'm not aware of. Thanks guys!
