Once again another computer related question, if you go through the topics i have started you will find that almost all are computer related question. Anyway i am very poor in computer stuffs so i have to seek mylotters help now and then. What i really want to know is that i switch on my computer twenty four hours a day and most of the time its left idle downloading movies or other mp3's etc. So, i was wondering if i switch off the monitor as its not a LCD so power consumption is high, while the programs are running like downloading from torrent, is it safe as i want to save some energy at least while sleeping. If its not safe than why? Please suggest something for me again on this, thank you all.

you can leave your monitor turned off...it won't affect the performance of your PC or the data in the PC...the monitor is just a "map" of the PC ... i hope you understood what i was trying to say :P

This is a very common practice especially when you are leaving your PC on overnight. I always turn off the monitor whenever I leave the room and just leave the PC on. this way you save hours of energy supposedly will be consume by your monitor.

Our PC is open 24/7 and we just turn off the monitor to minimize power consumption. I dont think there is trouble with that. My hubby said that computer gets more easily broken when it is turned on and off frequently and of course, it is more time and power consuming.

This would not be an issue in any way at all. The monitor is purely there to display what is transpiring. Strictly speaking you can use a computer without a monitor if you can mentally picture what the interface is like.

They are right Healer, its perfectly ok to turn your monitor off when not in use, they do that on servers. The only problem i could see with this is when you do it often than necessary. CRT Monitors consume more power at startup, due to heating up of it elements, until it is normalized. This is the reason why pictures take some time to appear when you turn it on.

I do not think thats a wise thing to do as you cannot see when you are finished and I think the computer will work better with the monitor on. that is my take anyway

I guess it would be okay. Just as long as you don't lose any saved data.

I do it all the time and it is safe. You don't want to leave your computer on for a long time though. It can overheat and have other problems. Make sure to only turn off your moitor and not the tower ;)
