Young @ Heart: Who Says You Can't Rock 'n' Roll in Your 90s?

I heard this on the news late the other night about a New England based group of senior citizens who do something quite different than sit in rocking chairs knitting doilies....they ROCK! What started out as a "little" get together of senior citizens is now taking on nation and even worldwide attention and even a movie has been made about them and is now out. Their average age is 81, and one member is 92....they get together and sing rock music from The Clash to Coldplay Here's the official website where one can even watch the trailer of the movie http://www.foxsearchlight.com/youngatheart/ One of the sad things that they do have to endure is the passing of one of their members. In the video I watch on TV it showed how one of two who were to sing a duet song on stage died shortly before one of their performances And here's another video one can watch from the Channel 7 news website http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/media?id=6069962 And here's a YouTube video of them singing The Ramones Want To Be Sedated that's hysterical http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McCpBsH9cOQ&feature=related So--what about you? Do you think when you're in your 70s, 80s or even gasps..90s you'll be singing rock 'n' roll?

Don't know what else I'd be singing. It's pretty much the only music I know. Paul Simon once said that the music of your early twenties is the background music of your lifetime (or something to that effect) and I think he was probably right. There was a clip on one of the morning shows today that showed a prison concert by senior citizens (lifers, I guess) and they were singing Sprinsteen. It sounded pretty good.

I'm pretty certain I'll be wearing jeans when I'm 80. Can't think of anything better. Jeans are sort of the American uniform.

I wonder if I'll be wearing the same kind of clothes when I'm older like those people...I took a costume design class in college. The professor said "Look at the way you are dressed now....this will indicate to you that you will dress like this for the rest of your life.." That was when I was about 19 years old...I'm now 52, and yup--still wear jeans--so maybe I'll be a jean wearing 80 year old

Being at the very end of the baby boomers Pye, I can not see me or my husband....for that matter any of our friends sitting idly by as the time marches on.... hell yes we will be rocking ... In fact I see me playing spades with the headphones on and Pink floyd wailing the their music in my ear.... Then again it might be the only way I can hear my music. But We do not intend to sit and knit baby blankets for endless great grands... hell I can not darn a sock! heck I will dance as long as I have a digit to move.

As I mentioned to marilynut above you, how about when we're in our 70s or 80s all get Harley bikes don on some biker clothes and pretend we're old hippies in a scene from that movie Easy Rider with Born to Be Wild as our anthem

Hi pyewacket! I do pray that when I get really old, I will still be living a life with a young and kind heart. i still want to dance and appreciate music and life, that is if my bones will allow me. haha..I do love rock n roll and I would love to sing and dance in those music til my end days. LOL! Those senior citizens are really people whom we can admire and emulate for they haven't lost their love for life and music. And it is just sad that they have to lose one of their members but I bet he is singing same beautiful tune at the other side. Just my thoughts my dear friend. Take care and have a nice day! :)

Hi! it is said that one is as old as he thinks-age really shud nt be a factor when it comes to enjoying the life-but yes as we grow older we are less healthy and fit as compared to our younger days and this can certainly come in the way of our enjoyment-atleast the physical part of it.

Yes we are as old as we feel...but heck though I've known people in their twenties that act a hundred...LOL I know a woman who is 75 years old she puts me to shame as she honestly has more energy than I do at times..so I hope to be like that...think the key is to have a zest for life and to never stop learning

but you cope and you forget the aches and pains when you are doing something you really love after all most of us are not doddering idiots. I worked part time until I was almost eighty one now i am retired and miss that dreadfully thats why i am mylotting so much. even younger people have aches and pains and they also cope

The videos are great. Well, its really good to see people enjoying despite the old age. After all retirement is supposed to be enjoying the fruits of your labor. I guess when I reach the age of 70s, I will still be playing my guitar. I do love rock in roll and during my high school days I used to play with our band.

this is absolutely wonderful, what keeps you young is your mind and as you say your heart, I just love it, wish I will be like that in my 90's. There is also rapping grandma, who is absolutely entertaining, and don't forget grandma moses who started her painting career in her 80's.

I hope I'm a "swinger" in my 90s as well. I have a SingSnap account...it's an on-line karaoke kind of thing --there's one "grandma" in her late 80s that does a lot of songs over there...she really sounds horrible..off-key, timing's off..LOL..hey but I give her a big kudos for trying anyway

I was born with Rock N'Roll in my blood... and I'll be listening to Rock N' Roll till the day I die. I have a huge collection of CDs with all my favourite music. Rock N' Roll will not die as long as I am alive.

Oh that was hysterical..I loved the way those four seniors were doing a crossing the street thing reminiscent of Abby Road...and then the oldtimers doing that smashing of the guitars like the guitarist Pete Townsend did in the Who...and of course the very end where the guy was giving the finger..heehee

Come on! - the night away!
Heck yeah! lol Even in my 90's I should still remember the songs of my day and be dancing away in my wheel chair, providing if I'm still alive... lol If not then I'll be booging along in my grave! lol Imagine that!!

Morning Pye, Sorry I haven't been around in a while. Your discussion made me chuckle this morning, haha. I'll be a rocker till the day I die. I still listen to all the old hard rock, metal bands, that's where the fun is for me. But, on the other hand, I also listen to more mellow music too, such as Celtic and Tribal tunes...just depends on my mood. My kids know when I come over they can play anything their hearts desire without any worry about me crabbing on "How can you listen to that music?", haha...I love it all.

More power to them I am eighty one and would love to be in something like that. see we are not all just ugh old people sitting in rocking chairs and waiting for non existant loved ones to come see us;. a lot of us are still vibrant and intelligent and can talk and sing about other things than our surgeries and bowel movements for pete's sake. we love the same things as younger people so why not a senior group who sings rock and roll go people go. right on.

I think they are just AWESOME!!! How much more fun could they be having? I'm afraid that the people at mom's place are mostly too old fashioned to be doing that - and I don't mean most of the people in the health care center either!

Crap! I think they're having more fun than I'm having some thirty years YOUNGER than them...heehe--with all my mother's idiosyncrasies and weird behavior at least she was "with it"--she used to love hearing me play my Coldplay and Greenday music..hehee
