Desperate to Lose Weight? How Much Do You Like Baked Beans?

April 11, 2008 9:16am CST
A man has lost 10 stones (140 pounds) by a diet of over half a tonne of beans! http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,91251-1312594,00.html Now I like baked beans, but I don't think I could manage 6 tins of them everyday! Surely he can't be getting a full and balanced diet? I mean sure he's lost the weight, but how healthy can such a limited diet really be in the long term? He's less at risk of bowel cancer, but what about other nutritional related illnesses?! What do you think?

I don't even like baked beans very much so, no I couldn't do this diet. Or if I did do it, I wouldn't be eating much beans so I would lose weight even faster than he did. I can't imagine eating just baked beans. I am dieting and all I have done to help me lose weight, is cut out the carbs. I have lost just over 20 lbs in the last 2 months and I feel really good, but I need to lose another 20 lbs and it is going a lot slower now and so some days I get really discouraged and I say to heck with the diet, and I have some carbs. But then the next day I feel quilty for it and I try to keep up the dieting without carbs till the next time I have to have some.

I like baked beans, but the idea of this diet makes me feel quite nauseated! Well done on your diet so far. I hear a lot about cutting out carbs helping with weight loss. Unfortunately carbs seem to be my favourite foods! D'oh!

Hehe. I wonder which is worse: this beans diet or the cabbage soup diet. I've heard that one's pretty pungent too! xxxx

I don't know how he can stomach 6 tins of baked beans a day!!! I hate them with a passion, so if i went on a baked bean diet i'd loose weight pretty quickly as i don't think i'd be able to even eat a single spoonfull. I do think that eating too much of one food can never be that good for you.

I rather enjoy baked beans on toast from time to time, but not everyday and certainly not 6 tins of them a day! I agree with you about too much of one thing. Doesn't sound right does it?

If you read the article he does not just eat beans, they are part of his diet. As long as he has a balanced diet, and it obviously has worked as a weight loss diet, I can see little harm in it. As the article points out he should eat the low salt variety because, as with all processed food, a tin of beans normally has salt in it and 6 tins a day would be far too much salt intake. The beans and the tomatoes in the sauce are good for him. For a healthier diet he really should get used to eating more freshly cooked food and try to get off highly processed and canned food.

I did read it, but it seems like he mainly eats starchy foods and I wonder how much fruit and veg he's actually eating. It doesn't sound very balanced to me, especially as you pointed out, he's eating processed foods more than fresh.
