http://blip.tv/file/817852 I watch bits and pieces of American Idol and was surprised when the Idol Gives Back show yesterday closed with the Christian song "Shout to the Lord". They replaced the word "Jesus" with "Shepherd" (for reasons unknown). The song still was powerful and I hope lives were touched. Inspite of trying to "water down" the power of God with the lyrics change I think invariably the song still showcased the power and love of Jesus Christ. I'm not sure how many of the finalists and the singers realised the depth of the song but I hope at least a few were touched by God. You can watch the video here http://blip.tv/file/817852

I thought it was wonderful myself that they did sing a christian song on American Idol. I thought it sounded really good and got a great message out myself.

If no one cries out praises to God, the rocks will!

Oh I see, but I thought they too mentioned Jesus in the process. Oh well, that might have been the episode last night when John was booted. But anyway, I think the producers know that they can actually spark some eyebrow raising comments from people who are very much sensitive to the politcally correct shows or terms that we use in our society. I think that's their way of non exclusion. They can't risk loosing some audience being turned off by the religious tone of the show, an issue which separates more than elicits respect. In all fairness to the singers, I thought the song was rendered well.

I agree. I think I may have read something into it that wasn't there. In all fairness. Maybe there was a Christian in the producing team that was allowed to say hey, there is a God and for those who believe it, why can't we let those who believe say so and give thanks and praise to the god we believe in?" Maybe????? I hope so!

I was surprised they made the choice to include that song. It didn't offend me personally but I thought it was inappropriate. I get that it is a signing competition and that they need to showcase different genres...and that it was their big "save Africa" week...but with the huge fan base they have that I'm sure includes many non-Christians, I don't think it's smart to get into the religious stuff. HOw would you feel personally if they started singing Pagan songs? I will agree that it is a powerful song though and one of my favorites of Christian music.

One of my favorite songs and was surprised to hear it on American Idol. Even the next night they sang it again. That song always touches me.

I know I'm going to upset a lot of people when I say this, but I don't think the song was at all appropriate for a non-religious program. I'm not a Christian. I was not happy with this song.

Well, for the intentions of the program on Wednesday night it was about giving to the needy and being compassionate to those less fortunate. Most people will relate that with some sort of faith and as an act of obedience to the god they serve. It may not be appropriate for a non-religious program but it was a feel good for most who do believe in God. If you were not happy with the song, then it wasn't meant to be for you. Just let it go and enjoy the rest of the season on American Idol. By the way, who do you hope to win?

I don't watch American Idol, so I missed this. Thanks for sharing the video. I think that's awesome. And I don't think it's every "wrong" for one who has faith to sing to and about the Lord. As "they" tell people of faith who complain about horrible song lyrics, "if you don't like it, don't listen." But many were listening, and to God be the glory.

It is a beautiful song and I am glad they sang it. The only problem I see is if they are going to let that song be sang, then they need to let songs from other religions be sang as well, including Pagan songs. They cannot single out. What is good for one religion is good for all the others.
