A much better economic stimulus package.

Wouldn't it have been more effective, cheaper and more simple just to cut the federal gas tax for a year?
So far the government has spent a huge amount of money processing, advertizing and promoting this "economic stimulus" package. A package that most economist say won't do much (if anything) for the problem.
The federal gasonline tax is 18.4 cents per gallon. The average American uses 464 gallons a year.
That means that the average American would get
$8537.60. A far greater amount than the current stimulus package. It would also be more effective stimulus because it would reduce monthly expenses for almost everyone.

I agree.
People are now having to choose between filling their tanks in order to be able to get to work, and paying their bills, such as mortgages, rent, utilities and buying food.
Eliminating the gas tax would have gone a long way towards spurring the economy and reducing the financial stress that families are under.

True.
The economy would really be helped by eliminating the Diesel tax for a year. Americans may use around 400 gallons a year, but think how much 24 cents a gallon costs our nation's trucking industry... which, of course, means US in the end.

Para Ted - You are wrong for several reasons:
1. Your proposal makes sense
2. It would be easy to implement
3. It would be cost effective
4. People would understand it
5. Politicians could not make a big show out of it.
You need to change your thinking. You are using common sense which has no place in government. Do you want the American people to think you are looking out for them and understand their needs.

lol so true it is crazy what the government thinks it is actually doing for it's citizens well the taxes in my state just got raised one cent on every dollar to cut the cost of property taxes. you might ask why i am complaining it is more the fact that in their race to cut property taxes they are actually hurting the people who rent. if you do not own property how will you benefit from this? it's just crazy!

Congratulations! You are too smart to work for the government or hold elected office. Your idea makes lot of sense. I'd vote for it.

Actually, I think I qualify for government work very well. My math was way off!
It would only save the average person $89/year.
Oh what I wouldn't do for a Delete button right now! !lol

Even though you used the multipler instead of the divider your on the right tack. The easest way to get people money is from the government is through tax cuts. Also it is more moral to cut taxes than the Federal government borrowing money from other foreign government, or them inflating the dollar to create more money, but lowering the value of the dollar. The economic stimulus is not an economic stimulus. What does giving someone an one time check, that did not earn it in the first place, fix the economy. Thev only proven way to jump start the economy is to cut taxes, cut government spending, and cut government regulations.

Thanks for catchin the point instead of jumping on my math.
You are right, cutting taxes is how you stimulate economies. All this will do is stimulate China, since we're borrowing it from them, then people will spend it on stuff made there.

I know several people that are looking into converting their vehicles to run on vegetable oil. It costs about $1,000 to convert. My brother estimated that he spends at least $300 a month on gas. That wouldn't take long to pay for itself.

That's a great idea, but only for a limited number of people. For vegetable oil to replace petroleum, we'd be facing some of the same problems the stupidity of Ethanol mandates is causing.
I hope it works well for him.

that actually make sense. i mean yeah an extra 300 dollars would be nice but saving money on gas would be so much better since i have to refill every week and it is something that i would get more benefit out of.

Yup, it's simple, lower the cost of fuel, increase the economy... especially when you figure how much lower it would cost to transport the goods.
But it makes sense and wouldn't pad the pockets of the politicians, so I guess we know the chances of anything like this being implemented.
