Can you remember a time when you have been in (or thought you were in) very real danger? Can you remember something that started out completely harmless and turned into a near catastrophe? I was reading a discussion the other day about white water rafting and it got me to thinking about the number of times I have carelessly put myself directly in harms way. I do some pretty crazy things on occasion and you would think I am sending Mr. Reaper a hand written invitation to come collect me years before my time is up. Take my white water rafting adventure for example. There were over a thousand people on the river that day and only the group of rafters I was with except for daughter opted to paddle our way to the end WITHOUT helmets! Am I really that vain that I would risk getting a concussion if thrown from the raft onto a rock just so I don't have to walk around with helmet head for the rest of the day? Yeah, it appears so. Then there was my trip to the Caribbean last year. I got so involved with a fish while snorkeling I followed it out past the dingy where the boats cruised around. I could have gotten my head taken off by a propeller or worse yet, encountered fins that belonged to something with rows of razor sharp teeth. Then there was my stingray adventure. Even though they were southern stingrays I couldn't help but think of Steve Irwin when one 5 feet wide wrapped her barbed tail around my leg and suctioned the small of my back. I know I have the potential of getting in an accident in my own home or every time I get into a vehicle but it seems I throw caution to the wind more often then "normal" people. Do you carelessly put yourself in harms way for the thrill of an adventure? Or can you remember a time when you were in very real danger?

Many, many years ago, I was out on Carlyle Lake (in Illinois) with a sort of boyfriend, in a canoe that he had built himself. Now, mind you, I don't swim. While we were out on the lake (and it's a really big lake) it started storming, and I mean storming to beat the band, and I didn't think we'd ever make it back to shore without drowning first and I really, really hate the thought of drowning, it terrifies me as one of the worst ways to go, and there I was, stuck out there, with this guy, and he was really very weird too, on the scary side for sure, but back then I went out with all kinds of people, showing a decided lack of good judgment. We did make it back to shore eventually, but I thought sure we were goners. And another time, I was very nearly raped by an attorney that I had gone to see about my first divorce. He invited me out to his country club, then home, of course, and it got very scary at one point, and ended with me running out of the house naked, trembling, and with a knot on the back of my neck the size of Texas from being so tensed up. I called my sister and her husband came and got me so I got out of that. And then there was the time I was driving a truck through a tunnel in France and this crazy Englishman came barreling through the tunnel, swerved my way, and we very nearly collided, but no, is that my memory or someone else's? I know that there's MUCH more, but I'm rather distracted right now, so I can't come up with anything at the moment, but I'll be back, I'm pretty certain of it.

I have white water rafted on some dangerous water...swam with the stingrays- funny I thought about them killing me too. Bungee jumped..Oops what if the rope snapped. Weird thing is, I never thought about any of that happening while I was doing the activity. I always think about it after but then I go and put myself in the same situation when I possibly can. I guess I'm just not all that scared of dying!

I can't even begin to tell you how many times i've prayed to God...Please let me get out of this one and I promise i'll never do it again...ever. I've gotten better as I've gotten older because I do learn from my mistakes. I guess my life-threatning adventures have not been on the level of yours. Most of mine just held potential to be.
