I have recently begun selling on Ebay, after reading a few ebooks and articles from Power Sellers. They all suggest that you start out by selling items from inside your home, like old clothing, appliances, etc. This is to make sure selling on Ebay is really something you want to do before you go and invest too much time and money into it.
After you sell some things, you can start looking into wholesale lots and suppliers that sell things in bulk for a cheap price to resell on ebay. You need to decide what kind of product you want to sell, then do research on that product like, where's the cheapest place to buy them, and is it a hot item on ebay. You could even open a store on there if you are really interested. Good luck!

I did for awhile and it did well, but my online crafting business didn't leave me much time to keep up with selling on Ebay.
I think the best way to do sell on Ebay is to research what is selling well. What items are selling for, how many bidders/how many bids the item receive, and what ending day sells best, etc. Each of those factors are important to getting the highest prices for your items. It also helps to have a bit of knowledge of the items you'd like to sell (such as collectibles & hobby items)
I still think that Ebay gets more traffic (buyers) to their site than all the rest of the auction places combined. There are other ways to help increase business and getting repeat cusomers...I sent you a friend request, if you accept it I'll send a pirvate message with more info.
