I had a baby about 8 months ago. I want to loose 3kg. And my problem is my tummy.
I can't go to the gym as money is an issue. I am still on maternity leave. Any suggestions how to loose weight safely. I am not after crash diets. Any advise from those who have done it would be much appreciated ;-)
I have bought recently skipping rope and gym ball. Will it help?
Thanks

Hi there! You already have a few pieces of equipment I see, and another might be a yoga mat. It's okay if you can't go to a gym, there are many free websites like www.sparkpeople.com or www.fitday.com where you can go and create a free account and track your meals and exercise.
Some suggestions would be to download some short fitness videos or buy a few multi-chapter or workout dvds so you have some routines to choose from. Start out by going for a walk every day, you could carry your baby in a carrier or use a stroller. Skipping rope is a great cardio workout and quick calorie burner, after the walk you could do that for 10 minutes, alternating with crunches on the ball. You might also want to purchase a set of small dumbells, 5, 8 or 10 lbs. You can use these to do presses and curls. Just shoot for at least 3 days a week, 15-20 min workouts. If you start easy and keep with it, you can slowly add in 5 minutes here and there.
As far as diet, here are some easy suggestions. Start a food journal. Track everything you eat for at least 2 weeks. Sparkpeople has a section where you can enter in your foods and it gives you the approximate calorie count, protein, carbs, fat, etc. Try to drink more water, 8-10 glasses each day. Focus on natural foods, things like fresh fruits and veggies, lean chicken and beef and fish, low fat dairy. Portion control is key, and you will lose weight as long as you burn more than you eat. Be careful of snacking and eating when you aren't hungry, both of these have been responsible for weight gain in many people. Start slow, make small changes. OH! And take a picture of yourself so you can look back in a few months and see the difference!
I do want to warn you, you can't really spot reduce, you'll lose weight all over, so don't be discouraged if you don't see it coming off the spot you want it to. it'll happen, it just takes time. My daughter is four and I am back in shape now but it took me about 2 years. I love my gym, I'm there all the time to maintain.

I have been very good. I cut down my portions and I have already lost 1.5kg since Monday. Im not doing anything drastic, just put less food on my plate.
I did a bit of tennis yesterday, so it's going well ;-)
Im not overweight, but still want to loose a bit, to be back on my pre baby weight ;-)
Thanks again

Yes exercise helps but you must also eat small healthy meals with lots of fruits and vegetables. That is so important because you won't lose anything if you are not controlling what you eat. I know because I am struggling with it but I am at least trying to choose the healthier options out there. I really want to lose a few because I need to buy a nice dress for my brother's wedding. I have about five months to lose as much as I can but I should start now because I should learn to keep it off too. It can be hard when you have to do so much and sometimes it is hard to keep up with all the other things you have to get done. You really have to be persistent and keep thinking about your goal. Don't give up and stay on it and I am sure you will get to your desired weight.
