I don't believe that the Philippines is really experiencing a rice crisis. I have a strong feeling that these problems are caused by greedy businessmen whose aim is to inflate the prices of rice to their own end. They bought these rice from poor farmers and they buy it cheap, really cheap that sometimes the revenues derived by the farmers from these businessmen are not enough to compensate for the hard effort that they have put on planting and irrigating the rice fields. These businessmen then hoard the rice in their storehouses and bribe officials to declare that a rice shortage is inevitable. Thus, after sometime, when the prices of rice increase, they can sell their current supply at prices way higher that its cost.
