Love is "the balance" in a relationship.

´To extend oneself to nurture one´s own or somebody else´s spiritual growth.´ That´s the definition of Scott Peck, who wrote the famous book ´The Road Less Traveled´. He talks about 'cathexis´, a term from psychology where you incorporate somebody else (or your dog, or your rosegarden, for that matter) into your psychological structure, thereby making it a part of yourself. I like it. It implies compassion, co-suffering, and co-happiness. And, more importantly, it implies effort. He says ´to extend oneself´, and that, too, implies an a priori decision to love. Might sound a little theoretical when I write it here, but I do recommend his book.

Love is when you know that nobody else will do but the one you are with.
