talk about how rules the world! Microsoft does this year! They are going to stop Windows XP and force people to go Vista. IN spite of the fact that most don't like Vista as they complain about Vista's hefty hardware requirements, its less-than-peppy performance, occasional incompatibility with other programs and devices and frequent, irritating security pop-up windows, but we are all going to have to deal with what we have until it dies on our end or upgrade to Vista -at a nice little price probably. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080414/ap_on_hi_te/microsoft_save_xp IN addition,, His Highness Microsoft plans to end full support for XP— including warranty claims and free help with problems — in April 2009 Microsoft already extended the XP deadline once, but it shows no signs it will do so again. What's it say when one single company has this much power! Good grief! So waht, we buy whatever we can now to help/support XP so we can baby it along as long as possible before we have to upgrade to Vista or hold out for the next version of Windows due to be released, currently targeted for 2010... Microsoft has us coming and going!

My goodness! Does that mean we will not be able to use our computer as of June 30 2008? Or is it only that problems cannot be solved online anymore. I am not a computer geek, so sorry if I put an idiotic question to you. My PC runs on XP and if it is not going to work, then I'm done

I'm in the same "class" as you on the geek part - but XP will work, they will just not support it anymore for problems and whatever they make new will not be made to be accomodated by XP. I guess kind of like when 98 was "retired". It'll work fine, until......

Yah I heard. Man that's really downright a cheap shot to force people to use a more expensive but less effective program. Well, I guess that's microsoft for you. I hope a new company would give microsoft a run for its money.

Sure wish the same! I hope Bill Gates looses a ton of sleep over what he is doing and looses his mind so he can't do it again! Okay, maybe not to mean, and I know progress is progress, but sometimes progress isn't good and most of the time, just because it's progress doesn't mean we should trash what we already have!

That just plain stinks! I have forwarded this to my husband as he is the one with the computer know-how in our house. He will tell me what to do and when to do it, at least about my computer. So XP will still work, but there won't be troubleshooting to fix problems? Maybe by then they will have worked the bugs out of Vista. *fingers crossed*

This was my husband's response to me copying and pasting your discussion and emailing it to him: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24070867/ The company will continue to provide mainstream tech support for XP users until April 2009, and will provide “extended” tech support for patches and security updates through April 2014. XP also will be available for sale until Jan. 31, 2009, by “system builders,” small businesses that custom-build “white box,” or generic, PCs.

Let me know if your husband as any tips or comments that will help out in this pathetic mis use of power! And I too, hope that by then the work out the bugs in Vista. Had heard they were horrible when it came out last year but haven't heard anything lately, but then again, don't ask about it either! This reminds me of when ME came out. Although I had just fine experience with it, it didn't last long and the games and disk things suddenly were not compatible with ME anymore so it was hard to find games for the kids. So while we fight "blu Ray " upgrades to our DVD's now we can fight Microsoft's power play!

I was going to buy a laptop last year, and then when I found out that Vista was coming out, I tried to get an XP before they all sold out...I don't have a laptop!

Glad Vista is working for you. Now we all know who to come to when our Vista is causing us to yank our hair out! LOL! I had a similar experinece with Win ME, that was a pink elephant, but no more than I did with it, it didn't bother me until I couldn't find disks/games etc that were compatible to ME. I do more on the PC and internet and Windows so having to change it just a nightmare waiting to happen for me!
