I have to write an essay on a question. " If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy". The question is discuss the validity of Madison's sentiment through the use of particular example or events. My question for everyone is does 9/11 refer to what Madison said. That's the only thing I could find through google when it comes to this quote. I just can't seem to come up with a good, valid answer to this question and to top it off I have to write a 5 paragraph essay. If 9/11 doesn't relate to the quote, I appreciate anything at this moment.

I would say that the actions of the government in reaction to 9/11 did in fact bring some tyranny and oppression to this nation. In saying that, I would point to the Patriot Act and to the illegal wiretapping and illegal capturing of telephone calls and emails which is a clear violation of the 4th ammendment, the collection of credit information by the CIA, the violation of right of detainees (illegal immagrants as well as so-called terrorists), the no fly list which has restricted flights of environmentalists and anti war protesters instead of the terrorists it was supposed to restrict, the addition of more branches of government that can mark things classified which goes against court rulings that government be transparent to the people, etc. I think that perhaps you may want to visit: Freedomkeys.com/vigil.htm for some quotes from others... I like the site. I think it would help you get more references.

Good answer. You said all the things I wanted to say but in a much more coherent fashion.

Thank you for your help with this. I just couldn't think of anything related to this. Got to love brain farts. Everything I looked up about this subject brought up 9/11, just couldn't think of how it related. Your repsonse has given me a lot of ideas, and the reference site is a huge help as well. I would have never been able to come up with a reference site that made any sense. Again thank you so much for your help.

I think that you don't have to use events directly related to the quotation as the only examples. I'm not even american but I know there are numerous examples where this quote may apply. (History does repeat itself y'know). Remember, Japanese-Americans although loyal to the USA were still interred in concentration camps in world war II, Vietnamese in America are also suffering from discrimination there because of the Vietnam War so just think how a guy with a "Nguyen" in his name must have been treated during the 1960's

Tyranny and oppression did come to this land through 911. But, let's look at what tyranny means. Tyranny is compared to a dictatorship. Now, we don't have any dictators running our government, but new policies were put into force. Restrictions in air travel, metal detectors in every government facility, with Americans feeling like they may not be so free anymore. Are we oppressed? I can remember a much easier life style years ago. With more and more restrictions placed on us, it does begin to look like tyranny is ruling us.
