We are almost done planting our vegetable garden. So far we planted 3 types of tomatoes,(cherry, grape and beef steak),cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini, 3 types of potatoes (red norlands, yukon gold and russet), green and yellow peppers, yellow and orange squash, green beans, corn, carrots, radish, pumpkin and garlic. We still need to plant peas, yellow beans, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, cantelope and watermelon. I believe that is all. We have a good size garden and we just started a new one about half the size. It seems like every year we just keep adding more and more. We also share with friends and family, they help us plant and pick and they get to take some home. Oh yea, we also have strawberries and a raspberry bush.

No, all I have is a small patio and theres barely room to turn around in. I did try planting some flower seeds, but haven't been real successful with them, so went out the other night and bought a few flats of petunias and marigolds to plant. Hope they turn out ok.

Wide view of our backyard garden in the fall - This photo was taken in the early fall through our upstairs screened in gazebo. The photo is a little grainy as a result of the screening...but it gives a wide view of our flower and vegetable garden.
How big is our garden? Well let me see...the front of our house is all garden and the back is mostly garden with a little grass left. There are gardens along both sides and back of the lot and in the middle. We have two water ponds in our garden and one at the front. Yes, we have a vegetable garden along the back and on one side and a circular herb wheel in the center back part of the yard. Gardens in Manitoba are seasonal...from May until the mid-October or whenever the first hard frost hits. During summer months the vegetables we grow include: onion chives, sorrel, cucumbers, zucchinis, celery, spinach, a variety of lettuce, sometimes tomatoes...mostly what we enjoy for salads. In the past we have grown peas, beans, carrots and potatoes but we found that root vegetables are quite reasonable here and are stored overwinter so we don't bother as much with those anymore. It has more to do with space than preference on these veggies. I have included a photo of our garden last fall as you can tell by the colors. The veggie garden and herb wheel are towards the left, back and center of the yard. This shot was taken from our screened in gazebo on the upper deck and that is why the photo looks oddly grainy. Gives you an idea...and that is why we are here...ideas! Raia

hello there to U...yes, we have a vegetable garden at home...well, it's my dad's idea to put up a vegetable garden at home too...aside from having a garden with lots of cool and beautiful flowers... Well, in our vegetable garden, we have lots of vegetables in it...like, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, carrots, green leafy vegetables, ampalaya, onions, legumes, and spinach... We have lots of fruits too in our garden besides vegetables...like, mangoes, bananas, jackfruit, calamansi, and papaya... You really can't believe how much my dad made that wonderful garden...it's really unbelievable, because we live near the city but we have gardens of our own at home... It's pretty cool and amazing because whenever i'm at home, i would go and visit our gardens...i would love to see all the flowers and the butterflies flying around...and on my left view, i can see our garden with lots of veggies and fruits... I'm really blessed to see the beauty of what my dad and my mom have made...my mom did the flowering garden at our backyard...full of flowers like roses, daisies, orchids, carnations, lilies, gumamelas, wild flowers, and etc...i can't even distinguish what kinds of flowers those other plants she has at her beautiful garden... Well, i remember my grandparents in Visayas, they have a sugarcane plantation and lots of corns...it's so cool to taste those sweet sugarcanes...i would love to visit them again there in Dumaguete, GOD willing, because we're at Manila and i really missed them so much... This is really a cool and a beautiful discussion...i bet you have a big garden too at home...it's been a while since i haven't log in here on MyLot, because i'm so very busy at work...well, this discussion really strucked me, it's really cool...have a beautiful and a blessed friday to U...may GOD BLESS U & UR family always!!!

Yes... your gardens sound wonderful. I cannot even grow grass where I live. We don't get enough rain to grow anything. And the soil is very bad as well.

Thank you...thank GOD, because of my dad and my mom's creativity...they both like doing gardening thing... Well, that's ok if you don't have a garden...but it's really good to have a garden of your own, you can visit and see it's real beauty which makes you happy, and you can see lots of butterflies too... I think there's a solution to some soil problem...like what happen to my aunt, the time when she really wants to have a beautiful garden too...to my surprise her soild in their backyard became a good soil... There's really a possibility that the soil in your area could have a solution in obtaining a good soil...well, that's if you really wanted to have a garden of your own... Anyway, i hope you could have a garden too of your own...because i bet you really like to have a garden too someday...you have a blessed and a wonderful day...may GOD BLESS U & UR family always with more and more blessings!!!

No, but I grow a few herbs in pots. My basil has a tendency to grow into a small bush... I don't know what I do, but it thrives! Some random greens (lettuces) as well... hmm, they actually need watering. Awesome avatar, btw way

No unfortuately do not have one yet, but in the almost six years we have lived here, I have been promised one........maybe this year! I have recently started my own herb garden in a planter box which has thyme, basil and corriander in it. But as for the vegetables I would like to grow.....pumpkin, snow peas, tomatoes, would be a start. But we do have fruit trees, apple, pear, apricot and peach. Also an almond tree. Guess that's a start.
