The best time to buy . . . anything

Did you know that airlines change their fare schedule three times a day? Or that cars are more likely to be a bargain at the end of the month? If you're waiting until your refrigerator gasps out its last breath of cold air to shop for a new one, you could be missing out on a chance for big savings. Timing your purchases to coincide with manufacturer discounts, clearance sales and off-season discounts will take out the stress of finding a good price on almost anything. We spoke with a few experts to get the inside scoop on the best times of the year to shop. Air conditioners Best time: winter Common sense prevails in the air-conditioner market, according to Diane Ritchey, editor of Home Appliance Magazine. "Think about when they're most in use: May through September. People feel the heat and they start to buy. The stock gets depleted, the demand is higher and so is the price. When cool weather comes around, most people just aren't into air conditioner purchasing, so the demand drops, as does the price," she says. Big appliances Best time: September and October Just like the fall clothing influx, new models of major appliance models such as ranges and washing machines hit showroom floors in September and October, says Home Appliance Magazine's Ritchey. About the same time, last year's models go on sale to make room. "Critical timing and seeing the patterns of the retail world can make a huge difference in appliance shopping," Ritchey says. I can't help but agree with you on the sense of timing here. I suppose in everything that we do, it is really important for us to be aware of the sense of timing - for it saves us the hassle and a lot of times our purse as well. As for the airfares, it is really beyond our control as the industry is really getting very competitive and the consumer market is getting more price sensitive. I find this area as being volatile in terms the price is very much supply and demand driven. When the supply is scarce the price is high but it does not stay there, next minute another airline which is looking to fill their aircraft will come with last minute savers fare to fill the vacancies - the price fluctuation will never cease.

I agree with you sky....I would never think to purchase an air conditioner in winter, but it does make sense that they would be less in demand, so a lot cheaper. I don't fly, but I do agree with the price fluctuation. Thanks for the reply ~Icy~

Thanks for posting this link. I sort of forget that prices flucuate during the day for airfare, so its always good to have a reminder. Most of the stuff is common sense, like the air conditioners is winter, but most people jsut dont think of buying them then to save money. Im so glad that retail is not like this(at least on a daily basis). I would go crazy if it changed more than weekly.

I am trying to fly from the Dom Rep to the UK at the end of May/June and am having a difficult time in finding a cheap ticket!!!! Sorry to ask you this but my computer is really playing up with me today - it has crashed more than 4 times and the next time it goes then so do I, to do something else!
