Household Rainwater Harvesting

Using rain water for household use has to be good for the environment and for it to be cleaner than city water is marvellous.
This couple in Portland catch 27,000 gallons a year. Amazing! and save a lot of money on thier meter bill as well.

There are people in the UK that are doing the same thing but on a smaller scale. I had heard a story that if you put out a really big rain water catcher then the local water authorities get mad with you. They don't mind you saving water that comes off your drains but they don't want you to put out a big 'bowl' because then the water isn't picked up by the land and isn't filtered down into the water table and so the local water authority was thinking of sueing these people for 'stealing their water'. Go figure that one out?!??! I had no idea that rain water 'belonged' to a water authority, did you? It probably also meant that as you said it would save on their water bill too!

I know it's incredible isn't it!?!? I'm sure that if someone hasn't thought up how to tax us on the amount of air we breath then someone will one day! LOL

We have been thinking about going with a rainbarrel for our gardeing water watering the lawn and the car washing etc here in Minnesota. Going to the Living Greenconvention next month and going to prioce them and get more info there. Thanks for the link as well.
