Why do I torture myself?

As some of you know, before I became a Stay-at-home, I used to sell advertising for a national fashion magazine - well, in that job and in the world of high fashion, the clothes I wore were usually high end (can't go selling to Chanel when you're wearing polyester). Well now I'm at home, and have very little need for the clothes I used to wear - even with jeans - very stupid to clean the bathtub in a pair of $250 jeans right? So why do I torture myself with all the e-mails I get of beautiful clothes and shoes? Bergdorf Goodman just sent me one with a photo of a Christian Louboutin "Feather ankle wrap d'Orsay pump" - GORGEOUS - the kind of shoes I would kill (or at least maim) to have. But in my "current" life I would wear them where??? I mean, even I can't justify spending $760 on a pair of shoes to wear twice a year (and believe me, I'm good at justifying!!!). So why can't I unsubscribe from the mailing list - it's pure torture!!!!

You poor thing. All dressed up and no where to go. I ended up in the same boat when my doctor made me quit working. Great clothes, no life.*sigh* I ended up attending every lodge meeting that I could get into just to class up the place. LOL Drove a lot of women batty but the fellows loved it. Over time though, the clothes went the way of Oxfam and now I just torture myself with lusting after product in mags and dreaming of the old days. I'll tell you this though - I'll be the best dressed corpse in town when my time comes! LOL

I know & I really out to be taken out and shot I tell you! I suppose it comes from working so many years in an industry where people thought nothing of dropping $500 - $1000 on a pair of shoes or $5000 on a suit. I do have to say though that with most clothes it is not really a matter of "designer labels" - the really expensive things are of such a higher quality and fit. Designers put so much thought into things like drape and lines and flattery (even moving pockets so you look skinnier - I swear I have one pair of jeans that make me look like I just dropped 10 pounds when I put them on!) that once you wear something like that - you find it SOOOOO hard to go back to less expensive brands. And the clothes positively last FOREVER! Now when it comes to trendy stuff or basics like t-shirts - I buy the cheapest I can find!

Hello SherrylWatts, I'm not going to claim to know anything about fashion but when you've spent so much time doing something like that where you obviously enjoyed it so much, that its just really hard to let go. I know being a stay at home mom is the most important job there is but I'd bet you would really love to get back into that world if there was a way to do both. Its good to see that you have your priorities straight. Sometimes you just have to let go of the world you used to be in and enjoy where you are. I wish you all the best. Take care, Terry
