As many ppl know I have Diabetes and so I have to eat every 3 hours. However, I eat very small meals...usually in a cereal bowl. The problem I’ve come up against is that when I try to eat off a regular dinner plate I end up eating too much. It should be easy to just eat till I’m full and then leave the rest but I guess the old lessons of eating everything on your plate when your kid really stuck with me. And those big dinner plates with just a little food on them look so barren.
Well, I came up with a solution that seems to be working so far. I’ve been using salad plates. Hubby still gets a dinner plate but I use a salad plate. The standard dinner plate is 10” around and the standard salad plate is 7” around. I still get a full plate and yet I don’t end up eating too much and making myself sick. I wish I had thought of it a lot sooner.
Do you ever come up with little solutions like this to help yourself when you have a problem? What’s the best self-solution you’ve found? Were you taught to always clear your plate when you were a kid? Does it cause you to overeat at times?

I like using a smaller plate too. I was taught to clean up my plate too. I don't make the grandkids do that, I don't want them wasting food but I don't want them stuffing themselves neither. I have always had a weight issue, its not fun. When I go to the grocery store and they have different size carts, I pick the smaller one too. You tend to keep putting food in it till its full.

I use the opposite trick with the kids...I used to give them a smaller plate because the amount of food they needed fit better and looked (to me) like a nice meal. The problem was, apparently to them the sight of a full plate was overwhelming even if it was a kid size plate. So now we put kid size portions on the regular size plate and it looks like less food to them so they don't feel overwhelmed.
I was never 'taught' to clean my plate and I don't make the kids do it either. In general though we all do clean our plates bcause I try to pay attention to what portions are appropriate for each of us....I figure it's easier and more satisfying to start small and go back for seconds if we need to.

I used to do that and I fell out of the habit. I lost 50 pounds about a year ago and that was one of my tricks. I sorta of gave up at thanksgiving here in Canada, which is in October. I have gained it all back but 18 pounds. I think I will go back to that little trick. Thanks for the reminder.
