DHCP -Dynamic host configuration protocol. DHCP provides the mechanism that allows a computer to join a new network and obtain an IP address without manual intervention. The concept has been termed plug and play networking. More important, DHCP accomodates computers that, run server software as well as that run client software. When a computer that runs client software is moved to a new network, the computer can use DHCP to obtain configuration information without manual intervention. DHCP allows the nonmobile computer that runs server software to be assigned a permanent address; the address will not change when the computer reboots.

DHCP is based on RARP protocol. This allows the client host to receive and IP address automatically from its server.

dchp assigns automatic ip address on each devices connected on a network, it also ditributes internet connection and local access on each of those devices (if you got a router or a server) :)

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. IMO DHCP is one of the service that a server may offer. It automatically gives address to its client pc's without any user intervention. Configuration is done on the server. You can use Linux, Windows and other OS that runs as server for this. Also all routers have this service pre-package. Depending on your needs DHCP is excellent for networking hundreds of PC's. Net Admin's use this for simplifying their work loads. :)
