My youngest son is in Kindergarten and I am having a devil of a time with him. He won't do his work even if the teacher does the paper with the whole class. He will zone out into his own little world at times even at home. The teacher says that sometimes he will just start wondering around the classroom and mess with things like the pencil sharpener or the play centers. When he was younger when he played at home he would imagine I guess vividly because if he was pretending to take out the trash he went through all the motions so far as even to shake out the trash bag. When he pretended he had a kitchen he would point out this is my sink, my refrigerator, my stove, my trash can and he would mad if you put something in the fridge when he wanted it on the stove lol. He had an unusual fascination with the vacuum cleaner. Now it is things like the teacher badges that he gets fascinated with. It is almost like a compulsive disorder the way he get fascinated with things. He wont hardly watch tv and if he wants to watch something it is the same movies over and over or sometimes the weather channel. When he is messing with things he goes into a zone. My husband said it is almost like he is vacant. That describes it best. even his eyes have the vacant look. He is retaining the lessons from school because the teacher says when he tests he is way above where he should be. He can do the work yet he refuses to do it. He is not very coordinated for his age and he says it hurts his hands to write and the papers are to hard. Is he just lazy or is something wrong? He was born two months premature and the teacher thinks it is just immaturity and his being a preemie. He will be 6 this june and sometimes he acts more like a 3 year old and other he acts like a 5 year old. Other than all these things he is very loving and non aggressive. He is friendly and loves being around people. I have tried every thing to get him to do his work at school. Grounding, corner, writing sentences,. Any suggestions and do you think he is behaving normal or is there something wrong?

Please consider having him checked by a developmental pediatrician. How is his social skills? How does he interact with his siblings? Does he often engage in solitary play? There are so many questions I'd like to ask to get a clearer picture of your son. It would be best if you have him seen by a professional just to really be sure.

I think he plays really well with others but he does get a little bossy sometimes. He will rarely play by his self. He either wants me or others to engage in play or he has to be in the same room with others. When he does play at home he plays like he is the teacher or a parent. His brother and sister do not pay him much attention. One is 9 the other is 15. Thank you for helping me I was not sure what kind of DR. to take him to. My mom thinks he needs tested for ADD or ADHD because she says he fidgets all the time.
