Connection problems

I want to connect my computer to the internet (not for long, just to get Steam working) and so I tried disconnecting this computer and putting the cable into the port on my other computer which said it is now connected but nothing happens. I get into firefox and it says that my homepage cant be found and then I get into Steam and it says that it can't connect while offline. I jjust want to connect to the internet so can anyone help me?

Sometimes the router just need reconnecting? Or maybe you need to check your network configurations - IP address, default gateway, etc

Oh yeah it didn't occur to me to turn the modem off then back on. I believe thats what my flatmate does when the internet stops working.

i think you have not granted rights for proper usage.go to network connections in control panel andthe select new connection setup wizard and then read proper instruction and follow

Does the light on the network card light up when up push the plug into the slot?

er... network card? I don't have a network card for my computer or for this one. but the plug lights up when i push it into the slot
