I'm afraid I have to say that video games for small children can and do affect them. Some of the more educational games are ok, but I would never allow my child to play some of the more adult and violent games. A close friend of mine has two young children and she has already found both her kids becoming more aggresive and they are 5 and 7 years old

Strangley, yes it can. My nephews have been playing games since they were kids, and still do. They changed a lot, matured faster, started using curse words at age 7. It's sad what violent games do. But if you put them to play things that are fun like a Mario game or something like skatebording, or Guitar Hero or fun stuff like that, they will be fine. It's the voilent stuff like Grand Theft Auto and the like that will change them.

Too much violation in the game may effect the small childrens.

The ESRB rating is your friend. My sister only lets my nephew play games rated E, as he's only 8. They can play their Mario Parties, but no First Person Shooters or games like Mortal Kombat, obviously.

I learned to play video games before learning to read, and it hasn't appeared to have any adverse effects on my development. I was born in 1988, so while young children these days might be exposed to Halo 3 or Grand Theft Auto 4, the worst I was exposed to was Super Mario, Metroid, and Contra, the game pictured in this discussion. In fact, I've always considered myself quite mature, and have always had a good grasp on reality. I've always shown strong academic performance and enjoy a steady social life. Of course game affect childrens' minds. Whether it is positive or negative likely depends on the child, the game, and the amount of guidance offered by the parents. It's very important for parents to regulate the amount of time children play their games, and it's also vital that they learn and understand the ESRB rating system. Even when children play games designed for their age group, it's still important that young children learn that it is only "make believe" and you can't do that in real life. Gaming is a healthy, fun, and sometimes educational hobby that offers something for every age group.

It definitely does. Some of the pediatricians in my area advice parents to limit video games and TV hours since it causes shorter attention span and therefore giving them problems paying attention in school. The content of the video games have rather harsh effects on the kids' behavior. I've seen kids acting out some rather violent fighting scenes which they probably got from the video games.
