Steam cleaning your carpet

How often do you steam clean your carpets?? do you hire someone to do or do you do it yourself??
I just steamed my carpet a cpl days ago. I don't own one so I borrow a friends. I want to do it atleast once a month. Its really amazing how fast the carpet can get so dirty. My friend does her carpet at least every two weeks. To tell you the truth I would rather take the carpet out and just have floor. But that is a lot of time and money I don't have.

You can actually hire carpet shampooing machines from the supermarkets near my house. They are really good. I used them in my old house, not too often though. But now, i have tiles in my new house so it's not needed. Winters coming and i wish i had carpet to keep my feet warm :(
