Where did the orange originally come from? Southeast Asia has long been the widely held view, but now, according to two scientists from the University of Western Sydney, Australia may be responsible for the original. Professors David Mabberley and Andrew Beattie discovered a number of previously ignored species while conducting research into citrus greening. DNA tests showed that these species were in fact part of the citrus family, and the Australasian varieties were the ancestors of the genus. The scientists suggest that the earliest species of citrus could have been dispersed from north-eastern Australasia by floating on westward-flowing equatorial currents about 30 million years ago.
