Would it wake you?????

Okay today I was lounging in my pool on a float and it got me to thinking. If you were to fall asleep on a pool float and then fall into the water, would it wake you???? I think for me it would wake me up, but of course I am not going to try it out. We have all seen and heard about people passing out and someone splashing water on thier face to wake them up. So would this be like the same thing? So tell me if this were to happen to you. Do you think it would be enough to wake you up? Why or Why not? Or, has this ever happened to you? If so, did you freak out?

I do fall asleep om my raft but I set my cell alarm so I dont burn. But if I were to fall into the pool I am sure I would wake as I am a light sleeper to begin with.

So you are the daring kind! Have you ever thought about the fact you could fall into the pool while you were asleep on your raft?

Oh yeah it would wake me. I'm a light sleeper anyway. It has never happened to me. I doubt that it would happen to me to, I don't get that much time by myself, so my kids would keep me alert.

You and me both. My daughter likes to cling to me in the pool even though she loves to swim.

Oh wow! I sure hope I'd wake up upon hitting the water. Especially since I can sink much better than I can float anyway. lol I'm pretty sure that most people probably would wake up on impact. If for no other reason, just from the shock of being jolted or displaced from falling off the raft. Well, that and the inability to get a refreshing breath because their head would be immersed in water and not above it like it should be. With that being said though, I too would have to wonder if someone who suffers from an extreme enough case of apnea or other sleep related illness could possibly drown instead of waking up. Great question! *hugs*

LOL! I'm glad that I'm not the only one with sinking qualities. I've had tons of people laugh at me and tell me it's impossible to not float. I've vacationed on a houseboat several times with a group of friends. Everyone wanted to sleep on the top of the boat instead of in the cabin. But we made the rule that anyone who was too sound of a sleeper or tossed, turned, or walked in their sleep was absolutely not allowed to sleep up there. Can't be too careful, ya know. :-) Hope you have a great day!

You sink too, huh? I have that same problem. No matter how hard I try to lay out flat and float on the water, my butt always ends up sinking. Okay, back to the discussion at hand. I would definitly not recommend someone with extreme sleep apnea or another sleep illness to fall asleep on a float in the pool. I imagine that they would not wake up as easily and could possibly drown.

I've heard the same things. I just tell them that I can't help it if I am butt heavy!!! LOL!

Hey Speedy! I think its so relaxing to lay on a float in the pool. But I have never been able to fall asleep. And if I did fall asleep and fell off the float I know it would wake me up for sure.LOL Enjoy floating in that pool.LOL

Hey Terryz, have you been away for a couple days? I haven't seen you around. Well it's nice to have your response to this discussion and I am definitly enjoying my pool at least now that it has finally warmed up. I haven't ever fallen asleep on my float either, but there have been times that I easily could have had it not been for my daughter bugging me.

I think it would wake me. I believe it would be like that falling feeling in your dreams that wakes me so I think actually falling would wake me especially into water.

Nice comparison!!! I guess falling into a pull is alot like falling in ones dreams. Only difference is falling in the pool is reality and dreaming about falling is just that a dream. But I can see the similarities and how it could wake you up.

I think it would wake me up immediately but, on the off chance that it didn't, our natural instinct to fight for our lives while drowning would wake me up. Deep sea divers actually have to teach themselves to fight the desire to fight for their lives when their bodies are telling them to swim to the surface. That is what I read somewhere. They have to teach themselves to ignore their natural instincts. I am not sure if it is true but, I can't imagine why it would be false. LOL! Anyway, if you stop breathing, your body will kick into fight mode and you will wake up. Unless you are rendered unconscious some other way. Some unnatural way. So, I do think that I would wake up as soon as a body part hit the water but, if not, I am sure that either water up my nose with the first attempted breath would wake me up. Water up the nose hurts really bad and, I don't deal with pain well. That alone would probably wake me up.

Thanks for sharing your point of view. I found it interesting what deep sea divers are taught. You don't deal with pain very well either, huh? Glad to know I am not the only one with zero pain tolerance. LOL!

I don't know how it could not wake you up! I would think that hitting that water would kind of give you a shocking wake up. I would probably panic, but I won't ever find out because I don't use them.

I have two boys and a husband that would not leave me on one, if I did get on one. I am either in the water with my disabled son or sitting on the side. They really just don't interest me.

Understood!!!! I do enjoy getting on mine, even though my 4 year old daughter does nothing but clings to me when I get in the pool. It makes no sense. She is a fish and loves to swim, but the second I get in the pool all she does it hang on to me. That is one reason why I would probably never fall asleep on a float, because my daughter wouldn't leave me alone long enough to fall asleep. Then she would probably wake me before I even had a chance to fall in the water. LOL!

LOL!!! That's what I figured also. But I am interested to see if anyone thinks differently. Yet it seems that everyone agrees it would wake you up, unless you were drunk. May I ask why you don't use pool floats? Just wondering.....

I feel asleep in the bathtub and I slipped into the water. I woke me right up and panicked me a bit too. It was warm comfortable water and I would assume a pool would be colder and be a lot more of a shock to the system. I think you would wake up before you hit the water compleately.

Someone else said that you would probably wake before hitting the water. I imagine as soon as the float started to tip that would be enough to wake you just as you are hitting the water.

i would have to be REALLY tired to fall asleep on a float in the water. If I did and i fell in I would wake up. I am a light sleeper and i wake up very easily. So no way would i sleep through that.

Okay I really think you don't understand what a float is. I am not talking about floating on the water with nothing underneath you. A float is basically a plastic raft filled with air. You lay on it on top of the water.

Oh I think having the water hit my face would wake me up and scare me too.I am glad it never happen to me because I think it would scare the bejabbers out of me. To think that I had fallen asleep and woke up with my face in the water would really upset me immensely.

Panicing would not be a good thing. Especially if you were in the deep end of the pool.

I think you would wake up, but it's probably not something you want to test out! I think the main danger would be if you rolled off your float near the side of the pool and banged your head.

21 Apr 08
LOL!!!! Oh believe me I have no plans on trying it out. I was just wondering about this as I was relaxing in my pool today. I didn't even think about the possibilities of banging my head against the side of the pool. Well I guess I will definitly make sure I never fall asleep in my pool on a float. LOL!!!!

Ill be waked up especially if water is cold since we will feel the water going to our body so everyone would be waked up by this. Ive not heard anyone happening to them this without waking up

Yeah, I have never heard of anyone actually falling asleep on a pool float and then falling in the water, either. But hey you never know. There might very well be someone out there that has done this. We will just have to wait and see if anyone responds saying this has happened to them.

I am not a very sound sleeper, so I think I would wake up before I was even all the way in the water. I would wake up as soon as I started tipping.

If you aren't a sound sleeper then I do imagine just starting to tip would be enough to wake you from your sleep.

Yes, the water and the noise would probably wake me up. I think the water more than the noise would wake me up. I've been known to sleep through a lot of things.

Yes I tend to be a heavy sleeper at times. But I also think that the water would wake me up.

In the worst case scenario, you roll over and fall into the water. Once in the water, you need to breathe. In breathing, you inhale water. You choke. The body's system panics and wakes you. Most everyone should wake up. The only exceptions I would expect would be if you were completely hammered drunk at the time. You might choke on water. You might drown. These would seem very unlikely to me. Most people wouldn't have a problem. Even when asleep, you know where the edge of your bed is. Very few people roll out of bed in their sleep. Therefore, very few people would roll off a float into the water, either. The body seems to know what is needed to keep you safe even if you are asleep.

First of all I would like to thank you for your well thought out response. It is greatly appreciated. I agree with you that most people would likely wake up once hitting the water. Drinking and getting in water is something I never advise to anyone. For the reason of drowning period. Just not a safe thing to do. Just the thought of someone drowning is scary for me. You also do have a great point about knowing where the edge is. It is true that most people don't fall out of bed because your body is aware of where the edge is. So I can see how this would play into being asleep on a float. But with a bed you are not ontop of water, you are on solid steady ground. Where on a float in the water, just the slighest movement could cause the float itself to tip and you roll off. I have had that happen to me being awake, trying to re-adjust myself on the float and losing my balance and off the float I go. I don't know of anyone who sleeps perfectly still, we all move around somewhat. So being on such a small float and having to steady yourself on it, I imagine just the slightest movement of trying to roll over from your back to your front could make you lose your balance and hence end up in the water.

its never happened to me. but i can say that im 99% sure you'd wake up. if falling into water alone didnt wake you, im sure once you were unable to breath you would for sure wake up.

Very good point. Didn't even think about running out of air underwater could wake you up, if the sudden splash into the pool didn't.
