Trash Can Issues

My 3 year old Miniature Schnauzer is a good dog and everything, but he has a knack for going into the trash can when I leave the house. I've tried putting the trash can up, closing the doors before I leave, everything. I would put him in the cage, but I want him to learn to leave it alone so he can roam the house while I'm gone. What should I do about this?

getting a trash can with a lid is the only thing I have found to keep the dogs out even that hasn't always work unfortunately. Darn smart dog figured out how to open the lid so we had to turn the opening toward the wall which really confused people when they came over but it was what worked. I don't really have any other suggestions, sorry I couldn't be more help.

We quickly learned there was no way to keep our dog out of the trash can. She was just tempted to get in there every time we were out. So, we ended up buying a trash can with a lid on it to keep her out. It worked and now she cannot get into it.
