When I went to Agricultural College one of my courses was called, "Feeds and Feeding." This was about feeding Animals, but it also applies to Humans. We set up an experiment with newly Hatched Chickens, We divided 12 just hatched Chickens into 3 pens. The first pen got crushed Corn Flakes to eat and water to drink. The second pen got water to drink, but nothing to eat, and the last pen got Nothing to eat or drink. Which pen of chickens lived the longest? Believe it or not, the chickens who ate the Cornflakes and drank water, died First. The pen that got nothing to eat or drink died next. And the chickens that drank water lived the longest. The explanation is, Cornflakes contain nothing that sustains life, and because it takes energy to digest the Cornflakes those unfortunate chickens died first. Many prepared foods like, Minute Rice, Instant potato, most ready to eat cereals, Jello powder,Instant Puddings,Powdered Drinks, Cake Mixes, and many more, are not worth the paper box they come in.

i don't agree one bit with such a cruel experiment. what exactly does it prove? that no one can survive on just cornflakes and water? yeah...no kidding! people don't sustain themselves on instant foods alone. there are other foods that people eat. it's ok to eat things that have no nutritional value or anything as long as it's not all you eat. poor chickens. never had a chance!

I've already explained that this was a College Experiment. It Was beneficial and it happened over 50 years ago. (the Roman Church burned a million Innocent, so-called witches, during the Middle Ages, and for what?) This College experiment changed my Life, as I've never eaten Cornflakes since. I feel this experiment Was Justified. I'm sorry if the merit of the investigation escapes you!

Also, there are a fair few foods that lack the calories our bodies need to digest them, but have other nutritional content. Celery is the most well known one. Do you eat celery? I don't... tastes horrible! I think cucumber is another one. A lot of leafy greens are low in calories but high in things like iron and calcium.

what a good sharing. if we apply the principle to humans many will enlighten and be aware of what we are going to eat. Human can stay long without food than without water. it is because our body is made up of about 75% water.

You have it right! Humans and animals are quite similar in many ways. Its said that Pigs are very close to Human as far as their digestive systems are concerned. (some Humans are very close to Pigs as well)Also there is a belief that," we are what we eat!" If this is so, we should monitor everything we eat very carefully, and drink lots of pure Water.

I don't eat a lot of instant or powdered foods in a box....I tend to cook more veggie's and fish and chicken these days....I believe that all these foods are bad for you and filled with lots of sugars...I did feel sorry for the little chicks that you all starved and killed though....Poor little chicks

Wow! Thats an amazing findings. It proves again that those instant foods are not giving human the nutrition needed. It can only make one feel full but don't give any health benefits. And it also tell us something from the second pen's experience that amongst all, water is very important.

It would be difficult to watch an experiment like this to the outcome, and not be very impressed. It changed my Breakfast habits forever!

BY your own confession this experiment is fifty years old. It is of no relevance to us today. Food is massively different now than it was then. The fifties saw a boom in factory farming and forced grown crops; foods with little to no nutritional value. Also, fifty years ago DDT was in use, all over the world. You know what beasts were first noted to be affected by DDT spraying? Birds. This is more likely to be the cause of your chicken's early demises. Cornflakes contain calories, more calories than are required to digest them. There are few foods that contain less calories than are needed to digest them.

barehugs you are so right A lotof the instant stuff tastes almost the same as the box it came out of. I have had mashed potatoes from a box that were acually sort of gluey and some flakes had not even dissoved. As for jello it is a boon for us diabetes who need something low cal and sugar freee and some of the pudding mixes are nottoo bad but I love to cook from scratch with all natural ingredients and find a lotof flavor thatway too.

Hi Hat! You just gave me an idea for a Taste Test.~ Fill a bowl with cornflakes, and fill another bowl with the shredded Cornflake Box.~ Add milk, and bring in the blindfolded Testing Panel. What do you think?Great Idea! Kellogg's is gonna Love this One! (Two delicious products for One Price!)

Your right...alot of that pre-packaged food really is terrible for you. Sadly, it's also the most cost affective foods you can buy. The more healthy foods are the more they tend to cost. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

OMG! That is just amazing. I didn't know that. Therefore, I assume, that cornflakes would be as good to eat as celery if you were on a diet to lose weight. Hmmmm. I am aware of the rule of 3's for human survival: 3 days without water, 3 hrs without heat, 3 wks without food, 3 minutes without air. I will keep this information in mind. Although I do raise my own food already that is packed with nutrition. Thanks for the info.

Only if you had them without milk *wink* or skimmed *eugh* And only then if the cornflakes were made of mostly sawdust. I never thought about it, but you're right about the 3's... weird, huh?
