Gen 1:16 says God created 2 great lights i.e. the sun and the moon and stars etc... Can someone tell me about what light Gen 1:3 tells about.

That light, as you point out, is a different light than the sun. And God calls THIS LIGHT "day". The sun, the greater of the two great lights, was made to rule over THE DAY- or over this particular light called "day". See(Gen 1:18). So it appears that the light named "DAY", is exclusive to the earth- or is an earth light, because God made this "day" light while the earth already was- but was yet without form (Gen 1:2-3), and the sun was not yet made. The earth, though already made, did not get its form until land appeared (Gen 1:9-10). Pretty strange indeed- but God is God!

When God said 'Let there be light and there was light' was perhaps just his own light, not the sun or moon, just a general light. It's further expanded when He created the actual sun and moon.
