I was watching a program last night on Natalie Cassidy from Eastenders she was talking about fad diets and she tried the maple syrup diet, cabbage soup and the 14 minute diet, she lost alot with the maple syrup diet but was very ill from it so had to stop early. So what diets have you tried that were succesful and did they make you ill or were you ok with them?? I'm trying to lose weight, not good at long stretched out diets so thought if i could find on that would kick start me losing weight for the summer i would be grateful.

I've been working with Gillian McKeith's diet from You Are What You Eat: http://www.gillianmckeith.info/ Because its veggie-based, I immediately lost the bad effects of fat and cholesterol, and with all that high-fiber goodness... well, we know what that does! I'm not being a slave to it, but 4 days a week is doing me all kinds of good... I feel energetic, much lighter on my feet, and don't miss all the bowel problems I had from being on medication. And the recipes are great, although I follow my personal preferences more often... I've taken to putting a big casserole dish in the microwave, adding 1/2 cup of unsalted chicken or beef broth, then adding veg in order of cooking times... rhutabaga, celery and carrot, set for 5 minutes. As thats cooking, I'm prepping the next ones that go in, like potato chunks, green beans, etc. Each time, I cook 5 minutes. Cabbage, asparagus, regular or green onion, I've even used radishes... whatever they have at the greenmarket. Anyway, when its done, I can have a big bowl, sprinkled with a little sea salt and lots of fresh-ground pepper... and its about my favorite thing in the world to eat!

Thanks for you advice, i like Gillian as well i have 2 of her books. Can i ask what rhutabaga is? i would have to substitute celery as well, i know it's really good for you but it's about the only food i really hate. I think i would add some cayenne pepper in mine as it speeds up the metabollism. the rest sounds good, will give it a try

Rhutabaga is the same family as turnip... the flesh is more dense so it needs to cook longer, and it has a more intense flavor. I love it! If you sliced the celery very thin, it would cook to pulp faster... then you could mix it into the broth and not notice so much that its there. There are so many benefits to eating it! Instead of salt in our table shaker, we have Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning... it has some salt in it, but the cayenne pepper and other spices make up for whatever is lacking. Its only hot if you use a lot at a time... the way I use it is like S and P, and it brings out the flavor of the food very well.
