Seat belts

I don't like seatbelts and hate the fact the it's the law. We are forced to where seat belts because otherwise we can be given a ticket. Isn't my own freedom being taken away from me? Shouldn't I have the choice to where a seat belt or not? Some people's lives were at risk for wearing a seat belt.

I think that getting rid of that law is a good idea and here is my reasoning. Smart people will still wear their seatbelts. Not so bright or careless people will not wear their seatbelts. Accidents do happen. Smart people will have a higher rate of survival. So who wins? Society of course.

Here's my thought, when I'm driving along a country road at a slow speed with hardly a car in sight I do not wear my seatbelt. When I'm in heavier traffic or on the freeway, it's a given, I'll be wearing the seatbelt. By making it a law that one must wear a seatbelt or be fined if caught, I have issues with that. Smart people will make smart choices and those who are careless? You said it...society wins!

I personally always wear my seatbelt when I am driving as a matter of habit. If I start leaving it off some of the time I might forget it other times. But I don't really drive along long deserted country roads. Everywhere I drive there seems to be other cars all over the place, even in the middle of the night.

What kind of world is it where people can't even choose to put themselves at risk? I know seatbelts save lives, but it should be your choice to wear them or not. Dan

that is right dan! can not ride a bicycle without a helmet can not ride a car without a belt can you go mountain climbing anymore? can a child climb a tree? the moral laws are quickly being ousted and even quicker being replaced by frivolous laws.

Yeah, it's a given that they could save lives, they have also caused the loss of life. Personally I feel that more and more of my free choices are being taken away because people are trying to avoid lawsuits.

I agree with you! IT is a major gripe I have. While I do wear a seat belt and insist my family does the same... even before it was law. I absolutely do not believe that it should be mandatory by law. In this country where someone can willfully abort their young, hire a doctor to help end the life of a sick or ailing family member etc etc they enforce that one must wear a seat belt. where is the continuity. whom do you injure by not putting your belt on - ?

You make a valid point. There doesn't seem to be any continuity. We have so many regulations, are we really as free as we think we are?

I believe that they just want us to wear seatbelts for protection just incase you have an accident or so. Better be safe than sorry.

That's why I would buckle in small children until they are of an age and don't need them. Better safe than sorry is good, but I still don't like it that personal freedom has been taken away from me.

I agree wholeheartedly, no one should be forced to wear seat belts You'll only be horribly mangled in the wreckage of your car, but at least you won't be able to complain about seat belt laws anymore

I guess it's a matter of perspective! But, it would be my choice, wouldn't it?

If your pregnant you should wrap the lap belt around 1 knee so that the baby wont get hurt, but it will probably break your hip. But it's well worth it to save your baby's whole life! anyways yes they really need to come out with some water safe seat belts, but other than that i know for a fact that the statistics show that seat belts save more lives than they kill. now if you want to talk about your rights to freedom you should be worried about all of the pesticides, chemicals, and steroids that they are putting in foods now and making special foods the label "organic" including baby foods! and telling those killers to stop putting that stuff in everyones food now that they've proven that it kills people and gives them cancer, so that even the poor babies will be able to live!!!!!!! Good topic. Jess.

I agree wholeheartedly! I don't like that someone tells me I have to wear a seat belt, but I abide by the law and wear it anyway. I do think my freedom was taken from me in that respect. We are organic farmers and I hear you about all the pesticides etc. in our foods. We have expanded our organic garden to start selling to the public. This will be our first year when we will be mass producing a lot of organically grown vegetables and herbs. Everyone should insist on organic veggies and buy only organic in the stores. Maybe the rest of the growers out there will get a clue when their products are no longer wanted.

A seatbelt is what ended up killing my mothers friends son. He rolled his vehicle and it landed in a drainage ditch full of water. The seatbelt got stuck and would not come off so he ended up drowning in just a few feet of water. His mother refused to wear a seatbelt and told every cop that pulled her over her story and she absoluetly would not wear one.

That's what I mean! There have been different laws passed in different states concerning wearing a seat belt. I really think that it should be a personal choice. If I had small children in the car I would certainly buckle them in. But, I personally think we have the right to choose.

Yes but surely more people are killed through not wearing one than those who are? Maybe people should have the choice wether or not to wear it but it would increase the risk of a larger more serious injury and personally im not willing to put myself in that sort of risk factor. The law is there for a reason because seat belts save more lives than they kill!

Perhaps, but it boils down to personal choice I think. It stands to reason that if you are traveling on the freeway, the risk is much higher so you would choose to buckle up. However, when you are driving along a scenic road at a much slower speed I should be able to choose not to buckle up. I think sometimes we have too many laws when some things are just common sense.
