I love to read books of all genres - be they Science Fiction, Action, etc., Some of my favorite authors include Ayn Rand (I like all her books), James Michner (he tended to be a racist in his younger days), Robert Ludlum, Isaac Asimov (I like all his books), Arthur C Clarke, Paul Anderson (despite the allegations of pedophilia, Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, James Clavell (I like his Shogun and King Rat), Stephen King.......... Picking up one particular book would be difficult .... In SciFi, it would have to be Asimov's Foundation Series, but Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged beats that by just a whisker - So Atlas Shrugged, it'd have to be.

As to why I like it, I first read this book during my late teens and this book simplified many things that seemed so complex at that age, it helped me define a path of the kind of life that I wanted to lead, on my own terms. As a young man, I was sometimes carried away by the thought that had been hammered into me in a convent school - that money was the root of all evil - until I read the book and understood that it was human greed, and not money which represented human effort and ingenuity, that was the root of all evil.

Ouch, the pedophilia bit was pointed at Arthur C Clarke and not Paul Anderson, whose name I added later among the SciFi writers. sorry for the typo His "Boat of a million years' is an awesome book!

Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged I have so many favorite books, but I guess if someone told me I could only have one book forever and ever this would be it. The characters are well drawn and each has defined motivations for their actions. Surprisingly the more often I read it the more clearly I understand the underlying philosophy of the key characters. There is nothing gratuitous in any of the actions of any of the characters. The book is written so well. The dialog is superb.
