Is television dangerous or helpful? How much time do you spend in front of the TV? Is it addicting? Do you get a lot of ideas from watching it? I'm to the point where I really could do without the TV. Any thoughts?

Television is dangerous when I am addicted to it and also providing wrong and useless information to the users. However, it is useful when providing good information to users such as current news and ideas. I am not addicting into watching television. I only watching my favourite movies and sports.

Those favorite shows can be addicting. Especially since the night time viewing tends to have continuous story lines now, just like the soaps in the afternoon.

Television is just another stage in the ideal of mass communication or globalized communication humanity has recently begun to follow. I will talk in terms of advantages and disadvantages from this point of view. Television has brought some new means of communication, video, audio and written alltogether, completing the spectre one needs to receive quality information. It has become largely available for all and popular in a relatively short time (few decades). But...there is a big "but": this communication was meant to be mainly undirectional (from them to us)... The need for feedback quicly followed as a normal thing when we talk about communication (that is mostly SHARING information), so interactivity was the next thing to come...and TV is limited from this point of view. Of course, the next best thing is the internet...it completes the cycle of communication and it provides all the possible communication types: verbal, written, non-verbal, paraverbal (both in written and in spoken language)... from ALL directions to everybody and BACK. To answer your question about addiction...communication is the essence of what we are as a society...it has all the legitimate rights to be addictive! ~just a few scattered thoughts...~

Your few scattered thoughts were quite detailed, thanks for sharing! I'm not liking a lot of the shows on TV. We have a Tivo unit and record the shows we would like to see. That way we skip through all the commercials. My favorite shows are recorded and my viewing is limited to what I record.

I agree with you. Tv is not very good and the programs are also not that educational. I think that only discovery channel, news and sports should be aired. The rest of the shows which talk about stars and all they are diverting the attention of kids, and most of the kids look up to the stars as role models. Kids don't have a healthy lifestyle because they want to watch TV. I am very much against TV.

That's true about the role models. Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton? I don't think I would want children exposed to this type of role model. I think that TV watching might account for some of American's weight gain.

These days there isnt a whole lot on tv that I care to watch, so for me it would not be that addicting. My children however, well thats a different story. They could live in front of the tv. I think that tv can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing.
