babies born addicted to drugs

i have a friend who works for the divison of youth and family services and she had to take a baby away from its mother the other day as soon as it was born. the child was born addicted to all kinds of drugs and the poor infant was shaking uncontrollably. how can someone, especially a mother do that to their own child? it is reprehensible. she says she sees it happen all of the time. the child has a terribly long road ahead of him jus to survive never mind any long term physical and mental problems he may have as a result of the drug use of his "mother". it sickens me.
