Which country are you from?

April 22, 2008 12:10pm CST
I'm only asking this out of curiosity. In the early days of the internet it seemed very American-dominated, apparently because of the way phone calls were charged. It's probably a bit more cosmopolitan now. I've only been on MyLot for a few days, but so far the majority of people who's nationalities I've been able to ascertain are American. I've been having a bit of fun arguing with a lady from Red China (when I say arguing, the pattern is that I advance an argument and she accuses me of insulting the Communist Party). Personally, I'm British, and I've come across one or two other Brits so far. My initial impression is that most of the posters here are denizens of the USA, but I could be wrong, so - just out of curiosity - where are you from? And do you get the impression that most of the people here are Yanks, or is there more of an even spread?

Hmm well I am Canadian. I saw a thing somewhere .. It tells you how many or a percent of all of the MyLot users .. From which country they reside in. I know the majority is American .. But there are also a lot of Canadians, British, Indians, and more. I would have to say that I mostly come across Americans .. But I have also come across a few Indian people.

Hi, thanks for replying. I expected there'd probably be some Canucks here. I've also come across a few Chinese, but they seem to be mostly toeing their government line in relation to Tibet etc.

Well, you've got someone now from across the globe. I'm from the Philippines and I can say that so far, everybody I met here are nice and very much opinionated (regardlless of what country they're in).

Thank you very much for the response. Based on my limited experience so far, I've found people here to be generally friendly. As for being opinionated - I enjoy a good debate anyway, so I think I'll be comfortable here.

I'm also from China, i don't know if you have problem with China or simply just Communist Party. I'll feel sad if you have problem with China, it'll be ok with me if you have problem with Communist Party. Anyway, communist party is not China. I've been here for a couple of months already. This is nice place where different ideas crashed here but people here are still in harmony. I learned so much here and met many awesome guys. Just have a nice day!

Thanks Kianli. I've never had a problem with China, just the people who currently rule it - and as you so rightly say, the Communist Party is not China. Thanks for the kind words, I like the atmosphere in MyLot so far. Take care.

I'm come from the Philippines. Manila to be exact. I've bumped into few other Filinos here in Mylot. Actually there are tons of different nationalities that I saw here which is interesting. You can talk about anything and exchange ideas.

I'm from the USA. As you can see from your responses, mylot seems truly international. I love that factor of the internet, bringing the globe together, people sharing ideas in real time across the world.

Nah, used to be a purchasing agent for the Air Force. The UPS guy used to call me that (good lord, I think some days I saw him 5 or 6 times)and it kinda stuck.

Citizen Stuart I am a Yank, but I think there is a good spread of defferent nations present here on MyLot. Most are from former British colonies, U.S.A, Canada, and Australia. Philippines have a large presents here, but that use to be an American Territory, so the speak English. MyLot is an English websit so countries that speak English will always have the majority. So you argued with a Commie, good going.

Cheers. It does seem pretty cosmopolitan here, doesn't it? I was expecting practically everyone to be from the English-speaking countries, but the also seems to be a fair number from the far east too.

Hey, thanks a lot for your very kind comment. In my country, English is our first language, so its the language medium for every single subject we have to take since young with our mother tongue being the only exception. Cheers.

Hiya Arcideaco, thanks for replying. Singapore? You seem to have a good command of written English. Cheers.

I'm from the Philippines. No, I do not have the impression that most of the posters here are from the U.S., I have friends from another site who are members of MyLot,too and we all like it here, not only because for monetary reason but also because we get to practice writing in English as well. To add some information about our people here, call center jobs is a big boom here...and most often than not, the call center agents are mistaken be Americans since they were trained to speak the way Americans sound like.:)

English is our second language here, and most often than not, if a Filipino doesn't know how to speak English they are considered by the locals as illiterate. Sad but true.
23 Apr 08
Thanks for replying, Idaantipolo. I've worked in call centres myself at different times, but it's not my favourite type of work - I don't have the right kind of personality for it, frankly. I know Phillipinos have their own language, and I get the impression that a lot of people there have English as a second language, is that right? Here in Britain we're notorious for being very bad at learning other peoples' languages.

I am British too. I think most people here are Americans, because the currency is in dollars, which could make other people feel like they couldn't get a payout or something. I nearly didn't join for that reason, but someone told me that you just get it paid through paypal and it converts it. I think there are quite a few Brits on here, I know about 5 or so that are my friends.

Yeah there is a nice atmosphere. I was quite surprised about that since I am quite a bit younger than everyone else here.
23 Apr 08
Hi Elixeress, thanks for replying. I have to admit, my initial motivation for joining was to see if I could earn a bit of pin money, but there seems to be a nice atmosphere here, and if the management want to chuck me a bit of small change for doing something anyway, that's a nice little bonus.

How are you doing, Hallee? I'm from Manchester. It happens I was down in London a few weeks ago, just for the day - I didn't see much of the place though, I spent most of the afternoon in St James Tavern, opposite Parliament (I was there for a party political meeting).
