Some people seem to have great memories right back to when they were a toddler. The furtherest I can remember back to was when I was 6 years old. I can't seem to remember memories before that. I do notice that I can remember events easier years later if it was sad, happy or traumatic. For example the last memory I can remember when I was 6 years old was chasing after my dads van when he told us he was leaving my mum. I was devestated. I can remember every detail and every word like it was said yesterday. However ask me to remember other things that happened when I was in year one and I can't remember. Another example when I was 10 years old, one of my happy memories, going under 30 seconds for 50 metres freestyle, my time was 29 seconds. That was a great moment for me. That memory is still strong today.
How about you? What is your experience with memories? How far back can you really remember? Why do you think this memory is still strong in your mind today? 1 person likes this

I can remember my days when I was in nursery school and I was then 4-5 years old. Beyond that I cannot recall my days. I believe that some sweet and some very bitter memories of our childhood do remain with us through out our life and we do not forget that, come what may.

OMG, how can you remember the delivery room? That is amazing, I have not heard of anyone remembering being a baby before. Shame your short term memory is not so good at the moment, that would be bit annoying.1 person likes this

i can't explain it myself.
i remember the room, the beaded bracelet (because i used to mess with it) and the window shade they'd pull up and dad would wave to me.
yea,the short term loss is annoying.
i can remember that stuff, but not where i put my glasses 10 minutes ago LOL

Hi Kiran-am sorry to hear about that I also had a similar experience when my ex-husband read mine and he was quite upset with some things I had put in there-after that I stopped writing one for a while too but now we are divorced I have started up again-my daughter makes me laugh about them as I have a box full journals dating back from years ago and she said to me'when you are gone mum i'm going to have these published!-cos they have all your deepest thoughts and experiences in them' my reply was charming they aleays say your famous when you die! and burst into laughter

Hi littleowl, I think it is a great idea to keep a journal, to remember things from the past, lots of photos are good too. I wish I wrote a journal more when I was younger as I am a bit patchy too. I used to write a journal but then my stepdad when I was a teenager photocopied it and used it against me. I never wrote one again.

i can still remember when i'm still 5 years old. my grand parents invited me to their house and sleep with them the whole because they missed me and no other people with them. it happens late at night i dream that i urinate at the CR but that was not true i urinate under my underwear and shorts, i am afraid that my grandma and grandpa angry with me because my bet was wet of my urine. so i leave their house and returned home at 3am they don't know that i'm leaving. i am lucky it only takes 10 minutes walked our home from my grand parents home. they are feeling crazy looking where i am but i'm home already only in the morning that my grandma went our home to ask my mom if i was there

I have very few childhood memories. But those that I do have all seem to be around traumatic things. I have specific memories from between 4 and 6 years old. Before that nothing really. After 6 I start to have more precise memories but they are still of specific things and not necessarily of the same things that my parents remember. I think my memory really kicks in around 7 years old.
Much of my memory is keyed by photographs. If you show me a photo I will usually remember what was happening at that time. But not if it was prior to the age of 6 unless there was also one of the traumatic events that was tied to that time.
I believe for me I have a sub-conscience block to my memory. I have this for some adult memories as well. I know that specific events took place but don't remember the details, thankfully.

I am the same as you, I only seem to remember traumatic events clearly, unless I see a photograph. I am glad we have lots of photographs to trigger our memory, greatest invention ever. I wish I could remember more, I talk to friends about school and they can remember alot of things i can't, it is so frustrating.

I think I remember back upto the age of three (I remember the hospital just before and after an operation I had then)...nothing more...besides some incidents but those are based on photographs. I also remember some incidents at school.
But my husband can remember way back to when he was a year old. I didn't think it was possible but he comes up with all these incidents and all his aunts and uncles suddenly remember them and agree though they had forgotten all these years.

I have a few memories that I think were farther back than before I was 6, but its hard to know for sure. 6 seems to be the magic age for me too however, from there on I can remember my childhood quite clearly. Great question for discussion. Makes you have to really think about it.

Yes 6 does seem to be the magic age. That is really good how you can remember your childhood clearly after the age of 6. Wish I could remember lots more events from my childhood.

I remember all kinds of things to where I was as young as 3 or 4. Some of the things are funny while others are not. Its probably because I looked forward to so many things. My mom said it did not take much to entertain me when I was young. Maybe thats why I remember so much. Thats cool though.

I remember when I was 6 years old and I went to nursery school by myself. My grandpa used to take me to the nursery school every morning and that morning I don't know what got into my head and I just left home alone. Fortuantly our house was just 5minutes from the nuresery school but anyway it wasn't that safe as I then thought. Now when I think about it I really wonder what made me go to nursery school by myself that day?

Why do you think you can't remember anything at all? Do you not remember important events that happened as a child, birthdays, christmas etc?

the furthest i can remember is from when i was 3-4 years old. I can vividly remember trying to wear my mother's high heels and arranging cosmetic bottles in her vanity by height.. At around that age, my mother was preparing for her nursing board exams and i often stick around her room, watching her study and imitating her handwriting with my doodles. she even gave me a notebook for writing my script-like doodles..Although i was mostly at home with my mother, i was very attached to my dad. i remember calling his office only to ask him what time he'll be home and to remind him to bring home mcdonalds for me and my sister. i even remember throwing a tantrum at the dentist's because my dad wasn't there.. it was also around that age when i started watching cartoons, anime and japanese shows dubbed in english.
I think people tend to find it easier remembering traumatic, embarrassing or very happy memories than any other time in their lives. i'm not a psychologist, but i feel that childhood is the formative years of a child's life, so having good/happy or bad memories tend to affect a child's fears, aspirations, decisions and even temperament later in life.

Wow you have a good memory, remembering clearly what happened at such a young age of 3 years old. I agree with you that memories in a childs life help shape who they are later in life. For example when I was a child my sister through fish guts at me, now in my adulthood I now have a phobia/fear of fish.

i very coolly remember .i was just two and a half.
my parents were posted in a distant place and this time we were visiting our home town, our grand parents and all, and when it was time to return back i insisted that i am staying with my grand parents !well as it turned out to be my parents returned without me and i was enjoying being with my grand parents and other relatives in the city for two full weeks. at a time when the connectivity and other facilities were not so advanced as they are today.
