Soaring world food prices

April 23, 2008 2:48am CST
Figures out today show that food prices in UK have gone up by 15% over last year. Some individual foods such as butter and eggs have almost doubled in price at the supermarket. An interesting by product is that sales of vgetable seeds at garden centres this spring have far outstripped sales of flower seeds. Seems we're all going back to the wartime spirit of grow your own! What steps are you taking and will you be following this trend?

Seems that product prices hike everywhere. the other day i went to the supermarket to buy yoghourt, before it was 6+ CNY, and now it's 9+ CNY, rise by 50 percent of its previous price. Vegetables and rice here are not rising that much. And measures have been brought forward by government and supermarkets to reduce cost. Salary's not increased, some companies will offer subsidiaries for price hikes, but it's volunteer, some will, while there are some companies don't do this. Hope inflation will cool down.

I find it significant that we have a food crisis across the world and that our government is diverting funds from corn production into ethanol production via subsidies. This diversion is thinning the food supply while paying for it with excess extortions from the citizenry. It perverts the supply & demand in the market by taking the free market and making it into a mixed economy (which, as Ayn Rand said, inevitably leads to the rise of pressure groups, Alt. Energy (ethanol) being one of them). http://www.investors.com/editorial/editorialcontent.asp?secid=1501&status=article&id=292806444260566

I enjoy gardening and I nearly always grow at least some of my food. With prices the way they are, I'll be growing more this year and looking to buy things I can't grow from local growers. Strange, but it seems that the price of organics and natural foods haven't risen at the same rate, so why not eat the best, as long as we have to pay the price?

Well we still have more than we need here in the US and it's high time we stop waisting so much anyway. I would love to grow my own but it's not possible where I live. So, just today I bought some basil and tomato seeds to start growing on a window sill.

We are buying at places that still have relatively low prices. We always grow our own foods when summer comes around so we always manage to cut our food costs quite a bit during the summer. We also buy more foods from discount food stores to help with the food prices.

Might one day start growing my own. I do fear though that things will simply get worse in the years to come. Even the UN and other sources think the current crisis will continue until next decade. The prices of rice, corn, wheat, soy are all up and this is appearing throughout the world. Its not just famine and food rioting in African regions, its also hitting the supermarkets in parts of the world. With the latter, there is a combination of transportation costs, and overall there is the growing expense of producing the food.

I live in an apartment. No room for a garden. I don't know what to do. I wonder if those bulk buy stores (Costco, Sam's Club, etc.) are worth it. Of course, with an apartment, where do I put 10 gallons of pickles?

its that way all over. herbs, veggies and fruit can be grown or bought at a co-op or organic market. eggs and some meats can be co-op'ed from fisherman and hunters, famers and so on. don't give in to store mark ups. spread the word and have a bunch of friends go woth you. meet up on shop days. have a good time and buy healthier as well.

Food prices are going up alarmingly. Weather patterns are changing and the price of petrol/gas contributes to it all. We are planning on starting a veggie patch and to get our girls helping us with it. Nothing beats home grown veggies!

15% I can easily believe that, but our incomes haven't gone up to cover the rise in fuel and food prices unforunately. I only have a yard rather than a garden but would love to be able to grow my own friut and vegetables. I may get one of those miniture green houses and try just a few tomatoes and maybe some herbs. My neighbour has an allotment and quite often brings me cabbage, cauliflower and tomotoes, and potatoes back from it. I remember my grandad always had a section on one side of the garden where he would grow runner beans, carrots, lettuces etc. I used to enjoy helping him tend it as a child so if I am lucky enough to perhaps get an allotment or a graden in the future I definately will be making the move to grow my own. Yes I am noticing that food prices have risen sharply, I have noticed this more in the last 3 weeks when I have been doing my shopping. Normally I spend about £75 - £80 a week but the last 3 weeks it has gone more to £85 -£90 so it is a sharp increase. I do not yet know how I will change this, I do not think that I will be growing my own though, not just yet anyway.
