The Local Football Final Is Over...

Yes, I finally got there, after absent-mindedly preparing a week ago!!!
We all boarded the bus at six thirty and set off for Hanbury Park Stadium, in Haywards Heath... some four and a half to five miles away, to watch the Malins Challenge Cup Final between Bolney Rovers and Rottingdean Village. (Even got that wrong before)
Including the players, there were sixty people on the coach, and quite a few arrived later in cars. The bus driver dropped us at the Stadium and we all went to the bar to buy a drink, whilst the players went to get changed in the Dressing Room. Beer in hand, I climbed to the back of the stadium, where I had a great view of the pitch, and sat eagerly awaiting the kick off, which was due to take place at seven forty five. The players of both teams were warming up on the pitch, and readying themselves for the pending match.
Bolney played well, and despite being amongst a few supporters from the other side, I voiced my opinions quite loudly!
Yup, we were taking eighty per cent of the play, but alas, the defence got caught off guard twice, and we ended the first half 0-2 down.
The second half didn't start much better either, as Rottingdean netted another goal, early on... I was beginning to give up hope. But then, Scott was brought on, and worried the defence enough to get a penalty. The penalty was taken, and the goalie saved it... but wait... the ref was having words with the goalie, and the penalty was ordered to be retaken. He must have moved!!! Phew. Shaun steps up and coolly plants the ball in the corner of the net! YES!!! 1-3. Then, a few minutes later... no more that five or six minutes, Scott gets the ball again, runs through with it, and SCORES!!!! Woohoooo, 2-3. At this point, the excitement was so great, I had to jump up on my feet, and stay standing for the rest of the match. Rottingdean were getting a bit aggitated, and there was a fair bit of pushing and shoving going on. The tackles were a bit risky too, but the ref let it happen. Bolney continued to surge forward, but they couldn't quite break through the defense. Then, the worst thing that could possibly happen, happened. We were so busy pushing forward for the equaliser, that the defense were caught napping again, and a Rottingdean player went through the middle to score their fourth goal. That was it really... only about five minutes to go, and it was unlikely that Bolney could get two back... besides, who wanted a penalty shoot out, after that? So, it ended up with the Rovers losing 4-2 to Rottingdean and they never got to lift the trophy.
Nobody was downhearted though. They'd got that far, which was a feat in itself. We all clambered back on to the coach, back to the pub, where a terrific buffet was put on. The pub was packed! There were football stories going on, a pool match involving about thirty players, and much fun was had by all. A very enjoyable evening out and a lovely evening weatherwise.
Does anybody else have any stories about their local football teams?

The great Cathedral/Bishop Ryan High School mud bowl.
Two great teams, lots of rain, lots of mud and fans and officials alike, blinded by the weather and the fact that in the fourth quarter it was hard to tell one team from the other.
My younger brother was playing that day, and made three touchdowns in the last quarter, carrying his team to the finals.
Until the films of the game were examined aftewards and it was discovered that he'd made the touchdowns over his own goal line! LOL So there was a lot of heartbreak in the city that night! And my brother never played in the rain again!

Awwwwwww... your poor brother. I'll bet he was devastated at the news that he'd scored the touchdowns over his own goal line, especially after such elation. Why on earth wasn't it postponed in that weather?
Brightest Blessings, my dear friend and thank you for your contribution. xx

High School boys where I come from are tough! LOL The rainy season was always football season it seemed, so rain or shine, the game went on.
Weirdly though, his playing attracted the attention of Pro scouts and when he left High School it was to play professionaly. So mud bowls can be good! LOL

Looks like a great event was enjoyed by all and to finish it with a great buffett was a joy to welcome.
The way you reported the match made me feel as though I was there at the ground. Well done.
You must have slept well that night I am sure.

Yes, I think even the players enjoyed it, despite losing. They were held in praise by all their supporters anyway. After all, it took a little something extra special to even get to the final, and there has to be a loser. We were all treated very well on return, and enjoyed a lovely buffet.
As for sleeping well... not really. I had things on my mind, but that's another story.
Brightest Blessings my dear friend and thank you for your contribution. x

Yes, there's great community spirit in my village. Everybody supports everybody else, and it's especially evident in the pub, our only real place left to socialise. That's one of the things that keeps me here... the other, being the beautiful, surrounding countryside.
Brightest Blessings, and thank you for your contribution, my dear friend. xx

Oh Darkwing, it seems like you have had a wonderful evening, finally (tee hee).
You got my heart beating there reading this, I thought you were going to say that you were going to draw. Such a shame that the defence was caught napping. Oh well, teach them a lesson next time. Sorry you didn't get to hold up the cup but as you say, your team got this far!
Sounds like the evening the pub afterwards was great fun too! I must say that sometimes I miss times like that. Oh well, I am living in paradise so I can't complain.
I never had a local team (well I did, Chelsea) but that's not what I would call 'a local one'... so can't add to this story.
Thanks for sharing this with us, my friend. Wonderful!

Yes, eventually!
It comes with age, my friend!
Chelsea were playing Liverpool last night whilst we were over at Hanbury, watching the locals. It was the semi finals of the Championship League and ended up in a 1-1 draw. The second leg should be quite exciting!
