Tracing Your Roots

How many of you have attempted to trace your family's roots? I signed up with a couple of sites about a year ago but I quickly learned that it could be a very costly thing. I am wondering if anyone knows of any sites that you can access that don't charge a lot of money if you're trying to trace your ancestry.

Here in Scotland you can go to your local library archives to get help xx

I know the library is a good source of information, weemam, but my problem is that my family really originated far from where I now live. I do plan to keep looking though.

i never tried tracing my family roots online because i am aware that i spend more money on it to get them all. the other reason it take how many days to get the data because some of it are not on file specially those file before computer age.

As far as I Know, every site charges. I know some people have done it on their own, going through church archives, city hall, putting info on the net asking if anyone sharing the family name has any info to share with them etc.

Those are great suggestions, winterose, and I especially like the one about sharing the family name.

I don't know of many free sites, but you can check with your local library and they will usually have some information on how you can start searching. I also used ancestry.com for awhile but I had to drop it as it was too expensive. I did learn a lot and I thought that I found some of my best information there. I think that with the search for my father in laws dad,it was the most helpful. I found that he had another family that his own kids knew nothing about.

It is amazing, carolscash, the things you can find out! My renewed interest centers around a cousin I have lost touch with, and I cannot seem to find anything about her.

I've done a lot of research on my family tree. I signed up for Ancestry.com for a while and found a lot through them. But I cancelled my membership because it just got too expensive. If you have a local library that has genealogy records that is a really good place to look. Most times genealogy libraries have computers and memberships to ancestry.com and you can use their membership to look up information. Here are a few links I have that have been helpful: http://www.cyndislist.com/ http://www.familysearch.org/ http://www.findagrave.com/ http://www.gengateway.com/ http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ http://amberskyline.com/treasuremaps/ I've found the hardest part about doing family tree research is finding good resources to get started with. But it seems like once you get started and start finding a lot of connections you can go a really long way. And a lot of your research will depend on exactly what you are looking for and where your family is from. Each state has their own separate genealogy records and census records so you might just have to call around to find your resources. Good luck to ya!

Thanks so much for the valuable input, cynddvs. I am familiar with a couple of your sources and I will look into the others you have suggested.

I have found some helpful information, carmelanirel, but there is definitely a lot more to be uncovered.

I haven't tried to trace my ancestry because I was adopted and don't know enough family names to get started. Was able to find out my parent's names but not much beyond so never did waste the time doing a major search. I could trace my adopted family since I know more names and more about them but it wouldn't be my roots. I sure don't know any ancestry sites that are reasonable. Good luck to you.

It is very costly and sometime pointless when all we can do back in time to in the records library is to the eighteenth century, then there are no more except some in the parish records that go back to the sixteenth century.
