Yes, there have been rumors of a new OS in 2009 but I can't see it happening. We had Win 95 then Win98, 3 years in between. Then Windows 2000 which was mostly Win98 with networking tools. Then WinMe which was out closer to 2001 I believe, but it was really a rushed out version of XP if I remember correctly. XP then came out in 2001, but again it was really not much different than Me. Then finally Vista that came out in late 2006 for OEM and early 2007 retail. As you can see there has been about 3 years between versions, with 5+ years for Vista. Given all that, I can not believe that Windows 7 will be out anytime before 2010. Also, you can not keep waiting for the latest and the greatest. In the tech world, no sooner do you get something than something better comes out. Get what you can now and enjoy it.

Actually Windows 2000 was drastically different than Windows 98 and based on Windows NT which came out in 1996. Windows NT isn't too well known since it was made primarily for business machines and not sold in retail stores. Windows Me was more of a gutted Windows 98 with a lot of the DOS based materials removed and almost no backwards compatibility with 98 and 95. It was an abysmal failure and most people rolled back to 98 or 2000 which came out about 6 months prior. The track record has typically been 2-3 years per OS. Vista is the only one that took so long and unfortunately failed to include a lot of the features that were originally planned. They just knew they had to get it out by Christmas of 2006.

You are right. I wrote that late last night and my memory wasn't fully engaged. Thanks for clearing that up. 2000 was based on NT. Do you think this talk of Windows 7 is really going to be Vista with the removed features included?

I would bet that it will be released around Christmas of 2009. Don't count on it though. Vista was delayed a lot before it was finally released at a barely functional level. Realistically, they could update Vista to have everything that will come with Windows 7. The reason they don't do that is Vista already has a bad reputation. Word of mouth has spread and they know that people who are using it only do so because it came preinstalled on their machines. Very few people are actually upgrading to it. Since you recently bought a computer you are in pretty good shape. Vista now has Service Pack 1 which fixes a lot of issues that were present when it was first released. If you'd bought your computer in December of 2006 with Vista included, then I'd have said you should have waited.

I heard that even with SP1, the fixes are not really as effective. I'm still pretty much waiting to see what's they're gonna do next. I think Windows 2000 was pretty cool but Windows ME was just another product to generate money. Let's sit back & watch the show then. In fact I feel Linux SUSE Enterprise 4 which I did test is really better than Vista.

Hey friend i don't think any new version is coming in 2009 as there is ain't any such news either and secondly new version is out of the minds and its still a question about the compatibility of the vista as it depends on the data card that is still under progress and developers are trying to develop that only to ensure the proper and effective use of the vista as it is still not that much reliable so i think nothing gonna change so early in 2009 but for sure we can expect such things in the coming four and five years so what i think is that you should keep on using your computer and don't worry about the operating system. have a nice time friend :D

Vista is not yet perfect because it has some bugs and glitches so I would be happy if they will make a perfectly running O.S w/ no glitches and bugs at all.

Mate, We are not even in the mid of 2008 and we are talking about a version in the year 2009 but still not decided on it though completely. Even if it is getting replaced in the year 2009, which month will be targetted for replacement ? Facts are very uncertain now. I suggest you start using Windows Vista and ideally when there is a new version of Windows, am sure the new version will take time to settle in the market and gain users confidence and should go through the initial testing period. Ideall atleast for the next 1 1/2 yrs - 2 yrs..you will be using Windows Vista... Hence, suggest to make the most use of Windows Vista.
